Default How many championships does it take?

So this is a question I've been wondering about. I feel like the cliche thing to say is 'oh jordan has 6 championships blah blah blah'. Now personally I am one that thinks ones overall legacy needs to have championships factored in. The question is how many does a guy actually need to be considered in the talks of GOAT.

Of course the player in question right now is Lebron. But my question is in the future (whether its lebron) or some other player down the road. If they are a complete and great player etc etc how many championships will one need to 'overtake' jordan as GOAT?

To overtake jordan, probably at least a few. To be near or at Jordan status probably a couple, obviously asuming stats are where Lebrons are at/stay at

Interesting thread. I voted 2-5. If gets toward the higher side of that range like 4 or 5 and stats stay the same the argument will be a great one.

Michael Jordan will undoubtedly be the greatest until someone like Lebron wins MORE than 6. How quickly everyone forgets smh. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player while Lebron is the greatest athlete.

With people talking about how great Lebron is athletically, it should be easy for him to win more then 6. It would almost be disappointing if he doesn't.

Its called age, winning 6 championships doesn't happen over night. Lebron is at his physical peak right now, OKC will almost positively steal some championships from Miami in the next few years. Without his superior athleticism Lebron loses a lot of his greatness. I have a hard time seeing him win more than 4.

I think James would need to win at least 4 in a row. Jordan never lost in the Finals. 6 for 6, with 6 MVPs. Also won 3 straight titles two times. Winning back to back is tough. But winning back to back to back on 2 different occasions is just nuts. Even if James finishes with 6, people will still bring up that Jordan never lost so he is still better.

Although important, I think people put WAY TOO MUCH on winning championships.

Bill Russell won more than 6... 11 to be exact.

Kareem won 6...

How come they never come up?

I think Bill Russell is the greatest winner of all time and Michael Jordan is the greatest player.

I doubt anyone ever passes him, but if Lebron wins 4-5 titles and 5+ MVP's....then MJ will be passed

Clearly lebron put plenty of stock into championships, joining 2 other all stars to solely win championships

Dont forget Robert Horry, but then nobody would dare mention him and rightly so. Bill played in the 50s and Kareem played forever. What Michael did was short and swift. I just can't put 50s bball on the same level as 90s ball, whether thats fair or not.

I can't believe you even thought to put Robert Horry in the same paragraph as Kareem and Russell.

If you hung from Jordan's nuts any lower, you would probably be on the ground.

Which still changes nothing from what I just said.

Championships are a measure for a reason, players play the game for championships, players look for better situations to win championships.

3 in a row is enough
Remember that we cant really compare teams from different decades
The NBA had different salary cap structure etc etc. just look at what memphis did.
If the penalty is higher more teams will be " weaker" to avoid penalty. Like the Heat now , they cant keep adding pieces like Lakers in the early 2000s

Remember, it is still a team sports

No way really???????

Tell me what player doesn't want to win a championship?

My point is fans put some number on how many a player has to do to achieve greatness?

Saying Lebron has to win over 6 to best Lebron is such a weak argument. Why doesn't Jordan have to win more then 11? or more then 6?

A lot of people were saying Lebron can't be in GOAT talks until he wins a championship. Now its oh he can't be in talks until he wins a couple, next up it will be he has to win 6, then oh no it has to be more then 6. its so lame

Big difference when you chase down a ring by leaving your team to find an easy route.

Fact: Russell, Kobe, MJ never had to take their talents to another city to do it! THey stayed home and made it happen!! The difference between earning one the hard way or chasing one down the easy way! Might as well go out and buy a couple up yourself and say "Hey im great because I bought 5 rings"
