Default How do you rank the best ???

Who is the best in the modern era?? I know I know theres Wilt, and Russell, and West and all those guys.......but cmon the game is not the same it was 30+ years ago. So lets start from the intro of the Finals MVP in 67.

We see this all the time, especially right now in another thread. MJ or Lebron, Bird or Magic, Dunacan or Shaq.

No one is ever going to agree, but in my opinion in comes down to 3 things in order of importance (and anyone on this list must have least one of the bottom criteria):

1. NBA Finals MVPS - The finals are where the greats, the leaders of the best 2 teams play. Basically being the "Man".

2. Rings - this is obvious. How many times did you get there??, how many times did you win??

3. MVPS - you have to prove that you are the best player in the league to be in consideration.

Lets have a look who I got here (please feel free to add to this)

FINALS MVPS

MJ 6/6
Duncan 3/4
Shaq 3/6
Magic 3/8
Hakeem 2/3
Bird 2/5
Kobe 2/7
Lebron 1/3

RINGS

MJ 6/6
Kobe 5/7
Magic 5/8
Duncan 4/4
Shaq 4/6
Bird 3/5
Hakeem 2/3
Lebron 1/3

MVPS

MJ 5
Lebron 4
Bird 3
MAgic 3
Duncan 2
Shaq 1
Kobe 1
Hakeem 1

So its obvious who the winner here is, but the guy that hardly get mentioned in the most under-rated player in my generation. TIM DUNCAN. I hope he gets 5.
He is 4/4 in the finals and has been the "MAN" 3/4 times, and add a couple of MVPS..............how is he never mentioned???
In my opinion when we talk of Kobe and Lebron all I can say is are you guys serious??
Kobe is not the best Laker ever how can he be the best ever?? and Lebron?? I know his numbers will only get much much better but he has a long long time to go before he should be mentioned.

Let the thread explode.......................

Lebron James.... Is playing better than ever RIGHT NOW.

I am hoping that he ends up with quite a few rings.

He is amazing.

Lebron will put out some more MVPs and will end up with 4 or 5 rings IMO so comparing a guy who is im his prime to peoples entire careers seems a little unfair.

Jordan without a doubt in my mind, and in my opinion there's no arguement either way. But what I really wanted to say in this thread was "uh oh here we go" lol

so 1. and 2. are heavily dependent about being on an amazing team.

the rings issue while important is heavily overblown.

there is also a huge difference between greatest player (legacy based) and best player (best at prime - one(maybe more) specific years). the answer to those two are likely very different.

Jordan is untouchable and cannot be reached, but I believe Duncan should be in the conversation with the rest.

I seriously want BO to make a new rule that the Basketball forum should NOT be allowed to make anymore "Who is better" threads.

It's not a censorship of speech.

It's a call for sanity!

I base it on dominance of the league. Jordan was untouchable. Lebron currently is untouchable.

to me the MVP trophee is overate because it has been given so many time to the best player on the team with the best record during the regular season.

Do you guys remember what happened to mvp David Robinson when he met Hakeem Olajuwon during the playoffs in 1995 ?

And what about Steve Nash having the trophee against a Kobe in his prime ?

MVP trophee doesn't mean you'r the best player in the world the year you have it.

MJ was the best player of the world during almost his whole career and didn't have it each year.

Finals mvp is pretty the same it doesn't mean that much when you know the importance of the match-ups in the playoffs.

I'm not saying those awards are worthless but I don't think you should mesure the greatness of a player with that criteria.

I believe he is French and the French word for trophy is the same but spelled 'trophee'.

Sorry, had to do it!

Meaning you failed in finals doesnt mean much. While lebron was in finals in 07 with the worst team ever....Jordan was comparably getting bounced in the semi's. Thats the stupidest thing ever.

Jordan is the greatest in most minds because he is the 'icon' of basketball IMO.
From the shoes, rings, dunks, flare, personality...etc. He made the NBA what we know it today... for the good and bad.
Jordan had it all. And still does.

It's asinine to keep ranking players from different decades. The times change.

Jordan 6/6 Finals MVPS that alone speaks volumes

It shows who carried the team to the win. And not once was Jordan carried lol

Very true. I agree.
But let's not forget:

Pippen
Kukoc
Rodman
Every call

And I too love Jordan and think he's the greatest. I just like to keep things in perspective.

I honestly think if Magic played more he would have surpassed Jordan.

Crazy as it sounds. But then if Jordan never retired lol
