Cool Panini, get a grip on your basketball releases,ur gonna crush the hoops market..

killing it 90 hoops style, They are about to put out 8 more craptastic products in the next 2 and half months, starting with Select April 3rd, then Marquee, Past and Present, Momentum, Brilliance, Elite Series(that's right folks, TWO elites this year, wth?) Crusade and ending with Gold Standard on the 26th of June. How is this a good thing? Limited, Timeless Treasures and Absolute were horrific, why buy these? Of the 11 products they ALREADY have out, ONLY one(Prizm) will still fetch original pricing, others aren't even close

You took the words out of my mouth! It's a massive flood for the next few months... I don't understand it. A lot of the stuff they put out this year is already dropping fast in price. With all this other stuff, it's going to drop further.

And it doesn't help that they're coming out at stupid MSRP's too. Who pays $120 for a box of Elite??? It'll be $60 bucks in just a couple of months. Absolute at $160??? Some of this stuff is a joke.

Man... boxes will be CHEAP this summer!!

WATCH: someone that is all up on Panini's nuts will come in here and say, aren't you the same people that complained about the limited releases last year?!?! Shouldn't you all be happy that Panini is flooding the market so you have wax to bust?

But in reality, we would be happier with fewer products if they actually were not all crap and variations of the same $H!T. How many times are they going to recycle the same technology and basic card across numerous products. For example, the stupid glass cards that they have released how many times already this year.

There are actually 3 products that will probably fetch more then the release price. Prizm, Select, and NT.

I also wouldn't call Select a "craptastic" product because it has the same hype as Prizm did and will probably be decent. They are already sold out of it. The others... well your probably right with the people that are buying single boxes.

Out of these products the one's that I think you can turn a profit on and that I will be breaking or have broke are, Panini Basketball, Brilliance, Hoops, Marquee, Past and Present, Prestige, Prizm, Select, and Threads. NT I guess as well since I'll probably just flip cases.

If you pay retail price then the products you can count on making money is. ........

I'm going to have a breakdown sometime next week on my Panini Base Basektball break so that I can show everyone the final numbers and all the work that goes into ripping-and-fllipping products.

I recall hearing Tracy Hackler say that there would be 24 sets this year.

24?!?!?

That's a whole lot from one company, but I think Panini has to do it to cover their exclusive license. So you can also blame the NBA.

in general, yeah it is going to be a great offseason for buying closeouts.

however Select will be exactly what everyone with Prizm fever is drooling for coming out at the right time. should be pretty hot.

I got back into ripping unopened basketball this season for the first time since the late 90s. I was thinking I would be able to attain a little bit of everything that was released for my personal collection (by way of boxes or packs). Unfortunately for me, that wont happen. I passed on Absolute,Contenders, Elite, Limited and Timeless Treasures mainly because I didn't like the look of the card designs. I will buy some of the New "Panini" when it hits retail, Select and there is something about Crusade that I seem to like. Depending on what else they are going to put out that we don't even know about yet...I could possibly only have 1/3(or less) of 2012-13 Basketball card release represented in my collection. For me as a collector who wanted to get back into it this year it is definately a disappointment. I understand the "more variety is better" point of view, but I don't see how it helps the "hobby" at the price levels being offered!

Only two products I think have stood out this season have been Prizm and Contenders... Select also looks promising. Other than that, there is so much overlap it is scary.

What is good about Contender? I'm just curious because I only remember the smoking gas.

NBA should be ashamed of themselves.

How do you give rights to someone who will never have Jordan or Lebron autos...

They have the double rookie class this year. They have Kyrie rookie cards. Why would you not try to put as many products as you can out? You have to when you can. UD did the same thing in 03. They made up a bunch of products just so they could take advantage of that rookie class. Why would they hold off on the previous year, limit their products, and not go all out the next year? I don't blame them for trying to make as much money as possible when they can. Even if some of the products are crap, people will still buy them to give it a shot. Who needs, maybe they'll score a couple of products that will last.

Pretty much. The NBA doesn't require 24 products. But in order to make a profit after paying the licensing fees, they have to put out a lot of product.

They are making up for last year's lack of releases.

The more Panini products that is out on the market, the more desirable (older) Upper Deck cards will be......

For example, Kobe UD autos are MUCH better (imo) than his Panini autos. The more Panini kobe autos that are released = Kobe UD autos increases in demand/price....... I will not be surprised if Kobe (Panini) autos slide down to that $90-$100 range due to the extreme volume of his autos being produced.....

I dont know if you have noticed but the star autos are much harder to hit this year compared to last year.

Not seeing too many Kobe,Durant,Rose coming out of every box break.

Anyone do a product total between 2011-12 and 2012-13 to see how many sets have been released? Id like to see a 2 yr total since this is a post lockout year with 2 combined years worth of products.

For the lack of product last year, this year has doubled up to make up last years. Thats how I am seeing it.

I personally dont mind a ton of product. Gives us consumers a choice. More choice. More to pick from. More to choose whether or not to buy. I dont see how that is a bad thing?

What is the negative side to having more choice?
