Default Alford to UCLA

Surprised this wasn't on here already, but.....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Seriously UCLA?

You go out and get a guy who has been to one Sweet 16 (like almost 10 years ago) and has missed the tournament with Iowa and New Mexico as many times as he's made it????????

Yea, that's "UCLA" good alright

What a joke and a total step down from Howland

Hahahahahahahaha

Definitely a downgrade from Howland. This move makes zero sense.

Some people on my Arizona think they almost did it as a last minute try to get Aaron Gordon since his brother played for and loved Alford at UNM

But it's like UCLA forgot that the Gordon family HATES UCLA, hahaha

Just a total bombing of a hire, doesn't make sense, I think there is a reason he wasn't even mentioned once as a possible candidate for the job by anyone

Maybe ucla thinks alford can get in with aaron gordon, since his older bro did so well under alford as a lobo.

Should be very interesting to see if alford can keep jordan adams, tony parker, kyle anderson, zach lavine and allerik freeman. If he can keep that crew together, the bruins should be pretty good again next year.

Alford can definitely coach, i have trouble with those who are ripping him in that area. He's turned new mexico into the premier program in the mwc and has done it with a fraction of the talent that most perennial ncaa tournament programs have. Let's not act like conference titles and tourney berths grew on trees at unm before alford arrived.

But heseemed very sensitive at iowa and new mexico and the spotlight isnt getting dimmer in westwood...

UCLA needed to go in a different direction and try and reconnect with AAU and HS Coaches. Alford seems to be that kind of personality.

Steve Alford turned New Mexico into a solid program and has had success at the college level. I like the hire, personally.

Alford is an amazing coach. He has turned UNM into a premier program and best in the MWC. Don't get why this is a joke....

People who are calling this a joke have no knowledge whatsoever, Howland had lost all his connection in southern california and could no longer get recruits. Alford has connection in southern california and got some of the guys that howland pissed off at UCLA. They needed a new coach and direction, and honestly after being denied by smart and stevens is someone going to argue that godfried or romar would have been better hires.

I don't think its an ideal hire, but it isn't a joke either. Probably a pretty indicator of where UCLA is at as a program. Got to rejuvenate that fanbase somehow...

I have nothing against Alford, but he is a solid coach at best

In his 8 years at Iowa he missed all tournaments twice, played in the NIT 3 times (two first round losses and a second), and the NCAA tournament 3 times (two first round losses and a second).

And in his 6 seasons at New Mexico he was in the NIT 3 times (one first round loss, two second) and the NCAA tournament 3 times (one first round loss, two second)

Do you guys really think that isn't a joke of a resume for the coach at UCLA?

That would be just fine for USC, but not UCLA

For a school whose initial list was Pitino, Donovan, Smart, and Stevens, that's a pretty big step down, no matter how unrealistic some of those choices were

They didnt really have many choices. Shaka and Brad Stevens werent going out there. If I was a good coach I wouldnt wanna go out there. The best basketball is on the east coast. The best players are east too. Then on top of that the facilities apparently arent the best at UCLA or comparable to other big time programs.

NCAA Basketball Blueblood programs

North Carolina - Roy Williams
Kentucky - John Calipari
Duke - Mike Krzyzewski
Kansas - Bill Self
Indiana - Tom Crean
UCLA - Steve Alford

Which of these things is not like the other?

It's nothing against Alford, but what has he done to have earned the right to be the coach at UCLA?

If you're going to take a bit of a gamble by taking a coach at a school like UCLA who hasn't "been there, done that" then I'd would have gone with Tad Boyle, Lorenzo Romar, or Mark Gottfried before Alford.

All of whom were on UCLA's rumored list of candidates

There is plenty of talent on the west coast to sufficiently supply the limited number of top schools out there.

And on top of that, the 2014 class is LOADED with west coast talent, the best and deepest west coast class in a long time, more than enough for the west coast schools to load up with elite level players

Boyle hasnt proven enough. Romar seems like he'll be at Washington till they remove him or he retires. Gottfried hahahahaha worse than Alford. He cant coach at all. He is a big talker and can semi-recruit but he cant coach. Look at the talent he had this year at state and look how bad they were. The coach I think thats right behind Smart and Stevens is Gregg Marshall but I assume he is waiting on a job on the east coast. He has won at both Winthrop and now Witchita St. He just wont be cheap for any school that comes calling.

If gordon heads elsewhere, this will be romar's final year at uw.

I have seen plenty of Boyle in the last few years, dude can flat out coach

Romar would have ran to Westwood if offered

And yes Marshall would have been someone who should have been considered before Alford too

His claim to fame as a coach is taking a mid major to a sweet 16 like 15 years ago and his horrible temper that has seen him cursing out college kids on more than one occasion

Again, solid coach, but not UCLA material by a longshot. He'll be lucky to be there for 4 years (full recruiting cycle) before he gets run out of town

If you're trying to say I'm upset they have Alford, try again , I LOVE the hire as he's a good enough recruiter and coach to keep UCLA in the middle of the conference every year and a tournament team most years, but one that won't make much noise.

That is exactly where I want UCLA to be as an Arizona fan, but that's not good enough for UCLA standards, which is why this is such a ridiculous hire, at least at this point in time. If they tried for a few weeks and couldn't get a better name, then so be it, but for them to hire Alford this quickly is rather sad

Again, he's a solid coach, but besides that three year run for Howland, UCLA has been pretty bad for quite a while now. They needed to make a home run hire to try and turn things around, and this just ain't it. You can make this hire without it being a bad hire once you've exhausted many other options, and they couldn't have done that with them moving this quickly on Alford

You don't get rid of someone who took your school to three Final Fours (yes, I know his time there was up, a change was needed) to replace him with a quick hire of Steve Alford

That is why this is a joke of a hire, and if you can't understand that, then you don't understand how college basketball as a whole works

Here is a good article on the hire

UCLA made a good hire (but not the hire the school is trying to sell) - CBSSports.com

Like I said, he'll do fine, not a horrible hire, but a just god awful hire for what UCLA was trying to do and what they publicly said they were going to do

Ugh, UCLA better not steal Tony Bland to help with Alford's new staff.
