Default International shipping to Canada Question??

Hi all, this might be a stupid question but I have a buyer interested in one of my items. He has asked for the shipping price to Canada. I will be using a usps medium flat rate box to ship. When I check the price quote to Canada it says
shipping : 15.09
Import: 9.82
So my question is how does the Import charge work? Do I need to add that into my shipping charge or does he take care of that when the item gets to customs? Sorry if this was a dumb question but I want to make sure I quote him the correct shipping charges before any unexpected problems occur. Please help thanks

i often ship to Canada via ebay and paypal. as far as i know, any custom charges are handled on their end. i've never had to deal with that, and i assume Canadian buyers are familiar with it.

Thanks for the response. I have never had to deal with this either and am not sure why it is coming up now

i believe Ebay's Global Shipping Program does make the buyer pay custom charges in advance. you just set your normal shipping charge... which is just your normal domestic rate since you ship to the Program center in the US. Ebay send a complete invoice to the buyer (which includes the international rate plus customs fees).

it's confusing because the sellers don't get a clear view of those charges. but the buyer should be able to see them on their end when they view the item.

i tried using the Global Shipping Program for a while. it was definitely more convenient but made shipping to Canada difficult.

Yeah, I haven't had a problem with the GSP till now. Usually it automatically charges the buyer but for some reason it didn't. The buyer is now asking to cancel his bid.....f* eBay

The problems started in January 2013 when USPS increased their international shipping rates.

The International Priority Program is really expensive and should be used on items over $100.

The first option to Canada, USPS First Class Mail Intl, costs $7 - $9 to ship to Canada with a tracking #. That is why, as I Canadian, I donít mind paying more. Secondly, USPS does not charge me brokerage fees, import fees, etc.

The second option is International Priority Shipping to Canada and it costs me $11.59 for tracked shipping plus an extra $4.60 for brokerage fees/import charges on a $20 item.
Total = $16.19 run through Pitney Bowes
Canadians are allowed $20 import free on each item they purchase before import charges.

From 5 experiences using these two options, USPS Frist Class Mail International had it to my place, Northern Canada, in 5 days to one week. The second option has to go through Pitney Bowes in Kentucky and takes 2 weeks or more due to the brokerage blah, blah.

Here is an example of why a Canadian would be upset. This happened to me!

Subtotal (13 items) = $86.81
Shipping = $80.73
Import Charges = $14.83
Total Charges = $95.56

I argued with the eBay International Rep but it was futile. The seller would not do anything about it.

I hope this helps.
