Default Heat And Sixers Both Need To Lose To Each Other Tonight.

There is a very special game being played tonight, the final night of the NBA regular season, with so much more at stake than just a boring old postseason berth. The Heat and 76ers will meet, each seeking the same draft pick, each needing desperately to lose their game to secure it. Tonight in Philly: itís TanknarŲk.

The Sixers have the rights to Miamiís first-round pick (via Cleveland, by a convoluted route that includes the 2010 LeBron James sign-and-trade and the 2014 three-team Kevin Love trade), but it is top-10 protected, meaning the Heat keep it if it falls within the first 10 picks. Miami currently has the 10th-worst record in the NBA. You see the drama.

There are two scenarios in play:

∑If the Heat lose to the Sixers tonight, they all but guarantee that theyíll get to keep their draft pick.

∑If the Sixers lose to the Heat, and the Nets beat lose to the Magic, the Heat would slip into a tie for the 10th-worst record. Itíd come down to a literal coinflip, giving the Sixers a 50-percent chance of landing Miamiís draft pick at No. 11 overall, pretty much the best case scenario for Philly in whatís expected to be a strong draft.

In every sense, it is in the Heatís and Sixersí best interests to lose this game. (For any team without a realistic shot at a championship, itís in their best interests to lose every night, but thereís something exquisite about seeing it play out on such an immediate, micro level, with one team attempting to wrest away the otherís prize, and both needing to fail on the courtóagainst each otheróto succeed in the larger struggle.) Tonightís game isnít merely about losing to get a higher draft pick; itís about losing to get a draft pick, full stop.

Of course, you canít force players to play badly. Tanking is a roster game played by front offices and not by the guys in uniform, many of whom, by definition of being bad players on a bad team, wonít be around next season and couldnít care less about improving draft positioning. This is how you get farces like Derek Fisher being asked if he will apologize to Knicks fans for managing to beat the Hawks on Monday.

God bless SB Nation for bringing our attention to this high-stakes matchup, and God bless the NBAís awful lottery system for making it all possible.

You shouldn't be rewarded for losing. No. 1 pick should go to the best record who didn't get into the playoffs, via Phoenix last year. You're right though, this is comical.

To be fair, Minnesota didn't tank and can clinch most ping pong balls with a loss OR can eliminate the Thunder with a win no matter what Pelicans do. Wolves were the most injury bit team in the league this year so their record because of injuries sadly is no surprise.

You know both teams are going to tank like crazy.

It's a lottery pick on the line.

I hope Beasley and Chalmers light it up. Heat fans already hate both of them

Even if the Heat lose tonight a team with a better record could still win the lottery

I bet the HEAT +115 Id bet OVER though. 2 of the 3 previous games were high scoring and that was when Miami was inclined to play at least a little defense

Until the draft lottery there's no point in trying to figure this one out. We all know that thing is a crap shoot these days.

The amount of injured talent in OKC far surpasses minny.

While I agree that tanking sucks, it would be difficult for teams that are just plain bad to get better if they can't do it though the draft.

Unfortunately in the NBA, you either want to be really good or really bad.

This was the Bucks problem for the longest time. They were too good to get decent picks and too bad to be a playoff contender. And Herb Kohl was happy with that.

That Atlanta Hawks strongly disagree

Has more to do with them finally having a real coach. Id wait and see before making any snap judgements on the Hawks.

Heck, I'd say Miami too. Wade missing games, Deng hurt constantly, Bosh missing half the year, Whiteside missing games, Andersen hurt. Minnesota, healthy isnt going to make noise in the West for a few years. The Heat went from probably a 4-6 seed to a terrible team in the East because of injuries.

McRoberts too. A well coached HEAT team without many injuries would have been around the 4th seed. An injured HEAT team had a shot at the 6th seed until about a week ago.....sadly they are poorly coached so we are where we are

With both teams trying to lose, best strategy would be to probably not step on the court and forfeit.

I've absolutely thought about this and its a very fair point. What I would like to see is after the 1st pick it would go back to a lottery. Like the Pelicans/Thunder would get the Number 1 pick then after that it would go back to a lottery. The TWolves and Knicks would get the best odds for the sencond pick and then on. It would still allow for bad teams to rebuild but you aren't automatically rewarded for sucking. Just my two cents.

Guy is finally playing like the number 2 overall pick... Such a douchebag, figures he only has a great game when it hurts his team.

Both teams came to play tonight. Nets won so it doesn't matter.

You serious? Did you bet on the 76ers or something?

He went out and played hard if the coach didnt like it he could have benched him

Yes Durant and Chuckbrook are huge, Durant missed a ton as did Dieng, Pek, Martin, Rubio. Lavine, Budinger, Hummel, Heck even KG when he came over. Overall Wolves were probably most injury bit team this year, Star wise yes Thunder but overall no one really beats Wolves.
