Default Examining Rarity in 2010 Topps Football

Examining Rarity in 2010 Topps Football

August 26, 2010 at 10:16 AM

Now that Topps is out, I think its time to go over a few observations I have had, especially in regards to the rarity of a few different cards. Topps notoriously sells well the first few weeks when all the set collectors bounce off the walls trying to complete a master set, but after that itís a crap shoot. One part of the product's slate that always sells well is the rare cards, and I think I have gained some insight with all the research I have done lately.

First, the crown jewel of every Topps Football release is the Rookie Premiere autos. This year we have a complete picture of the print runs thanks to the awesome addition of serial numbering, and I think it also gives us a clue to a few other things as well. In terms of the rarity, its pretty obvious that these cards are VERY rare. In a product with as many cards as this set has, a hard signed card numbered to 90 is going to be extremely valuable. More so than I think people expect. These cards not only hold their value through the entire card year, but there are more than a handful of collectors that chase them. That means for guys like Tebow, Bradford and Bryant, there is going to be a lot of competition. A Tebow Red Ink /10 is currently up for a TON of money, and to tell you the truth, it may actually be more correct in terms of current value than anyone would believe. In all reality, these cards are the first investment banks of 2010, and I have already started to acquire the ones I want as a result of the manufactured scarcity of this year's product.

The numbering of this year's RPAs are also a tell tale sign of the sheer number of fakes that are out there for previous years. There is a VERY good chance that previous year's versions are available in COMPARABLE quantities, which means that there are definitely not 800 Peterson red inks from 2007. Although people in the know have balked at the fakes for the last year or two, many people still refuse to believe that they are fake. Hopefully this will slap some sense into their stupid heads.

As for the Rookie Red Zone signatures, they are even more rare than the RPAs, despite having higher numbering. What people donít understand is that the 100 signed versions of these cards are available over the entire calendar of Topps products, so there is probably only 10-15 per player in this product. One forum member broke 10 cases of jumbos and only pulled 1 of these cards, and I think its safe to say that these are as big of a pull AT THIS POINT in the season as the Red Inks. Once the entire calendar is out, they will be more common, but that shouldnít effect the value due to the way they are spread out for 2010.

There is also a short print variation of every rookie in the 2010 Premiere Class, and many of them are much better versions of the cards for players who got shafted on their pic. They are seeded at 1 per case right now, so the cost for the top guys should end up being about 20-30 bucks and the lesser guys at about 10-15. I love the idea of having these variations, and I think that many of the rookies will also have similar cards in Chrome, so we definitely have that to look forward to. Unlike last year, there doesnít seem to be veteran variations yet, but it may still be too early to tell.

Lastly, the sketches (both artist and player) are interesting and cool additions to this product. The artist versions that have surfaced so far are incredibly well done, and they should bring very big numbers on eBay. As for the player done sketches, most of them are terrible, but that is why they are players and not artists. I think it was a good idea in concept, but I would have liked the signature on the front instead of the back, and maybe have just asked for a very cool inscription instead of a sketch. Thatís my opinion, at least.

I didnít get a chance to bust any yesterday because of lack of stock at the store I visit, but hopefully that will change coming up. Ill have a report on my luck when I get a chance to rip into some boxes.

Wow, does he sound excited about a Topps product? Time to get rid of that UD coffee mug and get a Topps one!

+1. Gellman is like Billy Zane from Titanic. The ship started going down and he left Rose (Upper Deck) on the boat to die.

Now, he's on a new kick. The boy has no integrity, the most freebees buys the most loyalty.

One of these days someone will have to explain to me why you guys spew so much venom on this guy. I know all about the UD stuff and his blog but I don't think he's any different than most bloggers. Some of you guys in particular are extremely vicious on any of his posts.

Personally, I think this is a good write-up.

Because he's a coward who spews criticism at everyone but himself. He started his blog (personally, I feel that bloggers are failed journalists) because of the "evils" of Upper Deck following the 2007 Exquisite disaster. Upper Deck sends him freebies to buy him off and now it's all "Evil Beckett this, Stupid Donruss that". He attacks people who he is jealous of, people who he wants to be. He's also transparent as a window. Now that Upper Deck is sinking, he's on board with Topps. Where's the integrity? Gone. He's a hired gun, the highest bidder can get his "services". Panini and Beckett have taken the high road when it comes to this turd. The biggest problem I have is that he's had NUMEROUS chances to confront the people he's criticizes and he ALWAYS has an excuse why he can't make it. There's always and excuse. He's a coward. Apparently, he burned his final bridge with Upper Deck because, when he was invited to the Rookie Premiere dinner, he ran around like a 12 year old at a Jonas Brother's concert getting autographs (which was a big no-no). Everyone was embarrassed for him, acting like a child. Way to go dude! Way to go!

One per case on SP's? I've opened a case and pulled 3 so far. Although, my boxes were from 3 different cases. I can't imagine hitting each SP from each case, but maybe I did.

I don't care for people who are extremely bias. Escpecialy if you want to blog about Sport Cards, I think you need to be right down the middle and fair. This specific blogger normally lays into brands that are not UD, and now he praised Topps and a product they put out. I thought he trashed this product in pre-sell?

Now is it because he finally understands that the messed up and there isn't a football product coming out? Well, at least not a licensed one? I don't really know, or care what his reasoning is. But he has just always been bias, and I think that is bad from a journalistics aspect - if that's what a blogger is going for.

I remember that u-tube video from that guy complaining about the Beckett Exquisite break. I didn't realize that this was the guy who made that video.

Thanks for the explanation.

I spent 24 years in the Navy on Submarines and dealt with alot of stress, bad situations (flooding and fires at sea) and missed a ton of time at home with my wife and daughters. Now that I'm retired from the Navy and working a normal job, I just don't let stuff like this get to me. I may not like it and I don't love the sports card world any less than you guys but I don't want to be drawn into the drama of it. Not worth it after all I've been through in my time in the Navy.

I've always said the sports card industry breeds dishonesty. I help fight it in my own way. Now I see and understand how you guys are fighting it in your way.

I didn't realize that I was a failed journalist. I suppose that is like me saying that forum posters are failed bloggers. Its not true, but there is the same amount of support for your assertion and there is for my in jest comment.

I get why people don't like Gellman, I also get why they like him. To my knowledge Gellman doesn't receive anything from anyone on his blog. Do you have proof that he does or are you just saying more negative things about him?

Frankly, Panini products are all trash in my opinion. If you like them then fine, but I have very specific reasons for disliking their products. I haven't bought any of their 09 or '10 products. If they come out with something worth while I might decide to purchase them. Gellman has criticized Upper Deck before and he has praised them as well.

So I will ask you if you have proof that Gellman is receiving cash, cards or anthing else for pumping a product. I guess I don't understand why you are so angry. You have tons of posts where you do nothing but get all angry with Gellman and personally attack him. It is rather sad.

One additional note, I don't believe that Gellman has blocked anyone from commenting on his blog. He does have to approve each comment. In how many comments that he has not approved, how many times were the people making those comments posting personal attacks or attacking his family?

Back to the topic, Tebow projects as a career backup at best. Go ahead and spend absurd amounts of money on his cards, he's not going to see the light of day unless Orton gets hurt.
