Of course Wicked Strong had to finish 4th........well, this is the closest I have ever gotten on a blowout pick'em! Should have went to Penn National for some off-track betting, could have made a decent profit!

2014 Kentucky Derby Payouts
California Chrome: $7.00 to win, $5.60 to place, $4.20 to show
Commanding Curve: $31.80 to place, $15.40 to show
Danza: $6.00 to show
$2 Exacta (5-17): $340.00
$2 Trifecta (5-17-4): $3,424.60
$2 Superfecta (5-17-4-20): $15,383.80
$1 Super High Five (5-17-4-20-6): $149,764.70

So instead of trying to win 3 boxes here, had you actually hit the trifecta you'd be buying cases.

Had the tri on 3 tickets (50 cents each) and the exacta ($1 payout)
when I went to OTB at night to collect, I find out I hit the 50 cent pick 4 from earlier races as well
awesome day of gambling ---- after figuring out what I spent for the day, cleared over 3.2K
wish I played the superfecta and/or the super high five because I had Wicked Strong (20) and Samraat (6) in my tri and exacta bets
---the only reason why I didn't play those two bets is because you had to play them for a buck and couldn't play a ten cent super like other tracks offer

it would have been way too expensive to play for a full dollar with the number of combinations I play

really hope Medal Count, Commanding Curve, and/or Ride on Curlin run in the Belmont in June because the extra distance suits them well

Just curious, if nobody picked it correctly, would we then move on to the people who picked 2 out of the 3 correct and randomize them and split the boxes up or even lesser valued boxes? Not trying to complain or anything, I did enjoy the game though. Thanks again BO for another fun pick'em!

Legion624 picked 3 of top 4 and included the huge longshot commanding curve

Well I guess I did pretty good considering I barely watch racing. Oh well, maybe next time. Preakness, if you can do it without making my head explode, how do you go about placing your bets on racing? Is it by volume since the odds on the exactas are so high? Just curious. You can pm me if you would like.

I'm not quite sure either, thought I would have had it, but that darn underdog got me!

go look in the off topic forum
someone made post about horse racing in it over past few days so it's probably on page 1-3

For the derby the key is to slash out horses that MUST get out in the front.
With 20 horses the horses that are pure front runners are usually screwed (except year War Emblem was able to slow down base and wasn't challenged on lead). With so many horses banging and fighting for position first quarter mile, some of the front runners get boxed in or overworked and put a fork in them.

the derby is HUGE for closers and one shouldn't be afraid to add deep closers even if huge longshot. Last handful years closing horses like commanding curve, golden soul, giacomo, charismatic, I'll have another, mine that bird closed late to either win or get piece of the exacta/trifecta

the trifectas pay so well on derby day that doing a bunch of fifty cent tri combinations is the way to go

even boxing 4 horses for $12 or five horses for $20 in a $1 exacta can get you several hundred

if medal count, ride on curlin, wicked strong, and/or commanding curve run in June's Belmont, those horses would be horses to look at due to the extra distance (Belmont is quarter mile longer than Derby)

my favorite bets when I hot the OTB or track are fifty cent or $1 pick 3 / pick 4 (selecting winners in 3 straight or 4 straight races)
It's fun to pick a few in the first leg, a few in the second, and then hope your horses hit in the final leg.

for beginning betters or those going in group for a fun outing, doing a show pool is fun too
(that's where you have everyone throw in $____ dollars into the a kitty, one person picks a horse to show, which is top 3 finish, and if it wins you carry the money over to next race, then a different person picks a horse to show, if it wins, carry money on to race 3 where another person picks horse to show...and so on)
it's a cheap initial investment and don't need to pick the actual winner just top 3. even if a person picks a longshot, there's a chance it can show
