2009 UD Black Football was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and it doesn't disappoint. Playing off the success of the respective baseball and basketball releases, UD Black Football features 2 cards per pack. All the base cards (1 per pack) feature a manufactured American Flag patch and are numbered to 250. All the autographs in the product are signed on card. In this respect Upper Deck has listened to collectors concerns about sticker autographs and has taken strides in the right direction. Some collectors were disappointed that the rookie cards featured the players in their college uniforms instead of their pro uniforms. However, in order to obtain the autographs on card, the manufacturing process had to be completed by the Rookie Photoshoot. You just cant have pro jerseys and on card autographs of rookies by November. There are two tiers of rookies numbered to 399 and 199 respectively.
The card designs really pop off the black backgrounds; and the gold ink for the autos is very attractive. Although, it seems that the individual box purchase may be hit or miss on getting a solid card, case breaks seem to be a good value. In the case we busted we got 1 Cut autograph, 2 film slide autographs, 2 quad memorabilia autographs, 2 manufactured American Flag autographs, 1 dual patch autograph, and several rookie autographs (including: Percy Harvin, Lesean McCoy, and Mike Wallace). Overall, we think UD Black Football is one of Upper Deck's finest products this year. It is a nice mid-end break for collectors who cannot afford to bust Exquisite or National Treasures. ATM Sportscards highly suggests you give UD Black a try and see for yourself, we think you will be pleasantly surprised at the number of nice Hall of Fame autographs that come out of a case.
