Panini America revealed on Tuesday the basic product information and preview images for its debut in the baseball card market with 2009 Elite Extra Edition, which will arrive in January.
The set marks the first baseball card set produced in the Arlington, Texas-based facility since the release of the unlicensed Threads, Prime Cuts (the 2008 Beckett Baseball Product of the Year) and Elite Extra Edition sets last year under the Donruss ownership, which sold the company to Panini in March.
The set, which appears to be licensed by the Collegiate Licensing Company, will include more than 40 first-round and supplemental first-round draft picks, and each hobby box will include four autographs as well as eight insert cards.
Among those scheduled to appear in the set are No. 2 pick Dustin Ackley, No. 3 draft pick Donavan Tate. The base set will include 150 players — 50 base cards and 100 autographed rookies. Every player in the set will have an autographed card.

Also back in EEE are the following insert sets: Throwback Threads, Aspirations and Status die-cuts, School Colors and Collegiate Patches. New are Elite Series and Passing the Torch autographs as well as baseball sweet spot swatches, aka Private Signings.
Also included will be cards of Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt as well as others who were stars in high school or college career before becoming legends in the big leagues.
The checklist was not yet released.

*NEW Updated Info*

* 18 of the top draft picks – including Dustin Ackley, Donavan Tate, Tony Sanchez, Jared Mitchell and Yankees’ first-rounder Slade Heathcott – will have on-card signatures for their base cards. (Their parallels will be stickers, but not their base RCs). The on-card autographs are a first for EEE.

* More than 40 first-round and first-round supplemental players have been signed to the program

* All 150 rookies/prospects will have autographs

* 2009 Elite Extra will also picture a handful of all-time greats as high schoolers or collegiate players including Pete Rose, George Brett, Nolan Ryan, Al Kaline, Mike Schmidt, Will Clark, Dwight Gooden, Don Mattingly, Reggie Jackson, Wade Boggs, Mark Fidrych, Barry Larkin, Jim Palmer, Fred Lynn, Robin Yount and others – and each will have autographs in the program.

* Collegiate Patches insert returns, with 50 different subjects signing

* Private Signings – a new insert featuring autographed sweet spot ball material from this year’s draft prospects (including Dustin Ackley and Donavan Tate) and some all-time greats, and #’d to 100 or less

* This is the most comprehensive draft/prospect set being produced this year

New info directly from Panini!

http://www.paniniamerica.net/dspNewsDetail.cfm?nid=481

With one month remaining before the scheduled release of 2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition, Panini America has released the checklist for the product that integrates draft picks, top prospects and - for the first time - baseball legends in the product.

2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Checklist (PDF)

The legends are shown in high school or college shots, some of them rarely seen before. For instance, George Brett can be seen crossing the plate in an El Segundo (Calif.) High School game, Mike Schmidt at Ohio University, Al Kaline is shown at Southern High School in Baltimore, Nolan Ryan is depicted in his delivery in a staged photo at Alvin High School and Mark Fidrych is pictured while at Worcester Academy.
Several other legends appear in Back to the Future Signatures, Elite Series Autographs and Private Signings.
"We wanted to mix a little of the old with the new without affecting the base EEE checklist, which just includes current prospects," said EEE Brand Manager Mike Payne. "Elite Extra Edition is so much about high school and college baseball prospects... we just thought it would be fun to show some names from the past as they appeared at that period in their lives. Some of the older shots are better than others, but all of them capture a moment in time and provide a glimpse of the player before he made it big and, in many cases, before anyone outside his school had ever heard of him."
One current big leaguer is also shown as a high school player: Albert Pujols, then a junior shortstop at Fort Osage High School in Independence, Mo.
Pujols hand-signed 20 copies of his Elite Series card
, and reportedly was amused at seeing the nearly 12-year-old image of himself decked out in his Fort Osage Indians jersey.
Highlights of the 150-card base set include:
  • Cards of the first 18 players in the Autographed Rookies subset (card #'s 51-68) were sent out for on-card autographs - a first for EEE. Their parallel cards will be sticker autographs. "The intent was to make those players' on-card Autographed Rookies as valuable as possible," Payne said. "To do that, and keep enough autographs in the program, we opted to use stickers for the Turn of the Century parallels and for any inserts they may appear on."
  • The first certified autographs of Aroldis Chapman - The 22-year-old lefthander and Cuban defector had not signed with a major league club at the time of the printing of EEE, so he is pictured in his Holguin uniform whom he played for in the Cuban National Series last year.
  • Some 42 first-round or supplemental first-round picks have autographs in the set
Other highlights of the product:
  • Pete Rose autographs and memorabilia cards
  • Elite Series autographs, Back to the Future Signatures and Private Signings - autographed sweet spot baseball swatch material - make their debuts
  • Throwback Threads - with, among others, an LSU Jared Mitchell jersey, a Brownwood (Texas) HS Shelby Miller jersey, a Mike Minor Braves jersey worn during the 2009 Arizona Fall League, an Arizona State Jason Kipnis jersey and a Millville (N.J.) HS jersey worn by Mike Trout
  • Yes, there will be Hot Boxes
Elite Extra Edition is scheduled to release January 20.

So how many parallels of the base prospects/prospect autos are there? Just gold and black 1/1, or am i missing something. I think last year they had black, gold, red and blue.

NEW INFO:

In each 20-box case, 16 of the boxes should yield six autographs

The other four are “hot boxes” and should yield 10 autographs and one mem card for a total of 11 hits

Aroldis Chapman....In EEE Baseball

One of the most notable autograph signers in 2009 Elite Extra Edition – from a checklist chock full of notable top prospects – is 22-year-old left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman, a Cuban defector who last week signed a six-year, $30.25 million free agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds.
Chapman’s Elite Extra Edition autographs are the first certified autographs he’s signed for any manufacturer. He is seen wearing his Holguin uniform with whom he played for in the Cuban National Series last year. The card was produced a full month before he signed with the Reds.
Chapman was the star of the Cuban National Team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, and his fastball has reached the 100 mph mark on radar guns.
