Default Advice-1943 Mercury Dimes

My father in law has 16,000 1943 Mercury Dimes still sealed in a bank bag that was bought back then. Best way to unload this sealed bank bag? Do we open them and sell one at a time which to me seems insane. I suspect that many of these dimes in this bag could get a lot of cash for him...thanks

Once you have the price down I would like to buy 400 of them.

I feel we might get the best amount keeping the bag sealed...prefer to go that route

I never heard of sealed bank bags of Mercury dimes. Morgan and peace dollars they had 1000 dollar bags. Are they circulated or unc? If it is sealed how do you even know whats inside? 1943 Mercury dime is a common date even in uncirculated. I would open it up and Sell them by the rolls. I just searched ebay sold listings for august. A unc roll of 1943 between 350-400. A circ roll of 1943 100-125. But if you want to sell it as a sealed bag i would contact a auction house. Bowers and Morena one of the biggest coin auction companies.

On just quick math in my head... let's use simple number estimates that I am sure are relative to current market for 'junk' silver...

$1600 face value in dimes at 20x face = $32,000.
$1600 face value in dimes at melt/market of .715 at $16.80 ($23.50 melt price)= $27k.

I think you'll lose out on, at least, $5k just selling in a bag to sell a bag. If there are a bunch of uncirculated coins in there, you could very easily be looking at a bunch more, totally depending on condition. Mercury dimes are just about the most popular fractional "junk" silver on the market. I'd look into it a bit before just selling it off, IMHO.

Thanks everyone. This is a SEALED BANK BAG OF sixteen THOUSAND 1943 Dimes I think it is stamped that. Might have to go Auction House since we are talking some serious loot. Thanks!

Here's your melt value - Current Melt Value Of Coins - How Much Is Your Coin Worth?

I think it's updated to the daily market, melt value today is about $1.70 each

$1.70 x's 16000 = $27,200

not sure what you would net after fees

Just take into consideration you will pay a fee of 15%-20% to the auction house. To pay a person to select any premium coins out of the bag and to get them certified cost money. You would have to get some MS67-MS-69 SFB coins to warrant that. Uncle sam will want his cut also.
