Indy's Comic Pick: Fantastic Four #52

Here's why. It's the first appearance of Black Panther. Has potential to rise in value should they make a Black Panther movie, and the rumors are that might just happen.

The previously released Marvel films are filled with Easter Eggs hinting at a larger cinematic universe that includes more than just Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America, but my favorite among them comes from the end of Iron Man 2. Featured in the scene where Tony Stark is meeting with Nick Fury about the Avengers Initiative, if you look at the monitors surrounding the two characters you can spot a world map with a bunch of points on it. One of the those points was located in Africa, and many took it to be a hint at Wakanda, the secret homeland of the Black Panther. Since then there has been a lot of speculation as to what the Easter Egg meant - whether it was just something stuck in to the scene as fun for fans or a hint at a future solo movie. Now it's looking like the answer may be the latter.

NM/M copies are outrageous in price, but can occasionally be found at good prices. That's your goal, find the best copy possible for the best price.

Did anyone pick these up three years ago? They've quadrupled in price since I mentioned them in this post.

Avengers #87. Black Panther origin (T'Challa)

I definitely see that one going up and I'm glad I actually grabbed 2 @ $10 ea. in VF/VF+ condition awhile ago :)

Tones 05-13-2015 07:45 PM

oh I wish I did had the chance to buy a nice copy for $50-60 back when, easy a $300 book now.... sigh...

I missed out on FF 52, but I recently managed to score an Avengers 87 as well. Definitely a great one to grab.

I thought I had one of these, picked up years before I discovered this board. I went back and looked. I have issue 53! :(

pjray55 05-13-2015 08:37 PM

Great call, I only wish I had been collecting back then!

I would love to see in addition to your new comic picks of the week some back issue picks of the week - maybe one for each age silver and up? Thoughts???

Jsims20 05-13-2015 08:51 PM

I got a readers copy a little over year ago for $12.

It is beat to crap but I'm still glad I snatched it up.

Those that know me know I'm a hardcore collector. Very glad I purchased this for $120 several years ago.

FWIW, I also think Black Panther #1 is a solid pickup now as you can still find this in shops at decent prices.

awesome book, Cujo :)!

Thanks! In all honesty I collect "tough black covers" like this and ASM 28 (Probably the hardest of all black covers to get in high grade), so it's really only a fluke I ever bought the FF#52, lol. I knew of B.P. but had never read his series, so lucked into this. FF#112 is another tough black cover to find.

Cujo reppin' the 505! Where in NM? I lived in ABQ for 13 years before moving out here to TX. Spent a LOT of money at Tall Tales back when Jeff ran the place. That's where I bought my FF 53.
