Just because the contest is off, it won't keep me from sharing with everybody. I am a huge fan of the Watchmen mini series. The art, the story, the characters, and all the little extra details at the end of each chapter made the whole thing come alive for me. I have read the story more times than I'd like to admit, and I'll probably read it at least once a year until the year I die. I don't think I'll ever own the original comics because I am a cheap sucker who doesn't like to buy the same thing twice, but I am happy with the hardback collection I have. One day I'll let my daughter read it and not just hold it

Are you reading the "Before Watchmen" series? I just can't seem to get into it...they should have just left it alone!

Sorry to hear that you stopped the contest but I am going to share my two stories as well.

I used to read comics when I was a kid in the early 70's up to the mid 80's. Read the basics like Superman, Spiderman and my favorite was Plastic Man. Switched to sports cards at that point and stopped with comics. I moved in the early 90's and found a shop that sold both and got caught up in the boom of books but when Valiant came out I was amazed that there was a company that seemed to be so far ahead of the other brands. Bloodshot was a great story line in my opinion and really got me reading. These were the only books I actually kept from the early 90's. Fast forward to around 1999-2000 I started a new job and found a card store nearby that also sold comics. I asked the owner for a good book to read and he pointed me to a new book called Preacher. My jaw hit the floor when I read it. The story was great, it was scary, funny, exciting. Everything it should be and more. I must have read them 50 times. I bought all of the TPB so I could keep them on my bookshelf and to this day will still read them when I get the chance. i really hope they make a movie or show someday like they said.

Was going to enter this but just didn't have the comics scan ready at the time, anyway I digress...

For me it's all about the fun philosophy of Green Lantern/Parallax from Reign of the Supermen to Zero Hour to Final Night and finally Rebirth.

Nutshell;

1) Cyborg and Mongul blow up Coast City
2) Hey guardians think we could fix this for everything I've done for you
3) Nevermind I'll do it myself
4) Why stop there, let's redo it all
5) Green Arrow and others stop him
6) Green Arrow and others need him to relight sun, sorry about that whole stopping you thing
7) Become spirit of vengeance for a bit
8) Finally remove living fear within you and are reborn, Batman still hates you

Just loved the whole "what if I had the power to really set everything right" philosophy struggle that happened and the underlying great will overcomes all fear underlying tones to it all. Knocking around Supes and Bats in the process also works.

Edit; Should note that as a kid growing up it was all about Conan and SSOC. SSOC was just such a blast to read fantasy-wise.

I just can't do that to myself. I am afraid those Before Watchmen comics will screw the the way I view the original story, just like the SW's prequels did to how I now view the original trilogy.

I had to quit because they are terrible...I mean just terrible. The only decent story is Rorschach storyline but even that I don't want them to ruin it so I just quit "Before Watchmen" series...good thing you never opened them!

Preacher was the first non-capes comic book I read and like you, really enjoyed it. It led me to seek out other non-mainstream storylines like Y:The Last Man, Lucifer, The Walking Dead, and Fear Agent.

I have also refused to read any of the "Before Watchmen" books. It was a brilliant stand alone story. There is no interest on my part to know anything about them before the mini-series. Had I been publisher at DC, I would have asked for new ideas of instead of pre-ideas based on an existing property that was so iconic.

Someday, somewhere, someone will make a Preacher movie. It HAS to happen eventually.

100% agree Indy. If not a movie, then surely a tv series on a network like HBO or Showtime. It'd be perfect on a network that can push the limits.
