Its the 90's all over again the industry is going to crash. Absolute horse poop u dont need 52 covers of one issue. Every Lcs i've been too has at least 15 to 20 walking dead 100's and Uncanny avengers #1's on the shelf. Market getting flooded is a bad thing for us and lcs.
Its a good thing for Image,DC,Marvel in the short term but long term it will hurt them. Rant over nothing to see here

It seems like a horrible idea at first, but if done correctly; then it could be a fantastic plan. What I mean by correctly is that they only issue that STATE issue to the actual state, i.e. Nevada only gets Nevada copies, and that is replicated by each state. That would make the hunt a lot more enticing, rather, than each state getting all the other states copies as well.
This would light up on Ebay like no-one's business and it would create inter-state conversations! Just my .02 G |

I'm really glad my local shop didnt get alot of the variants for the rest of the run of the Marvel now... maybe one for a specific book but that was it. I can go online and buy the Baby Variants that I wanted for 3-4 bucks and be ok with that... I really only need one or two of those. I agree its just becoming ridiculous. I'm glad that I really dont like all the variants that are out right now. I get the books I want to read not the pretty box it came in.... But on the other hand George's idea up top is pretty good!

DC will release 52 different variant covers for the first issue, each cover will feature '52 U.s. flag variant editions,' one for each of the 50 states in the union as well as one for Washington, D.C. and one for Puerto Rico.

After reading about the state of the variants in the industry, it does appear that a crash could be incoming. I am no marketing guru, but if you wanted to create a secondary market for collectors, why not go the print run method. X first print, first run books with a specific cover. X second print, first run books with another cover. Hell, you could even number the print run books if you felt the need to. Once you are done with the variant runs, start the second prints, unnumbered. People can still get all the second run covers at a reasonable price and all the collectors can fight for the numbered versions.
I dont know, just a though.
