Default LBSB333 Comic Book Day Pickups

I'm gonna follow Dougie Fresh's routine and make an ongoing thread on my pickups including CBD and other purchases.

Here's what I got for 1/23/13 from a visit to two local comic book shops:

Batwoman #16
Deadpool Killustrated #1
Saga #7 (1st Print)
Saga #8 (1st Print)
Peter Panzerfaust #4
Peter Panzerfaust #5
Peter Panzerfaust #8 (I think there were more copies of this one...I need to go pick these up ASAP if this is Hook's 1st appearance!)
Uncanny X-Force Blank Variant
Young Avengers Blank Variant
Young Avengers O'Mally Variant x 4 (I am really digging the cover on this one)

I did come across a copy of Nowhere Men #2, but it was pretty beat up. I also asked my LCS about the sketch variant of Spawn 227, and he wasn't sure if they were going to get one. But if they do, I've got first dibs on it.

Pics are here if anyone is interested!

Default 1/30/13 Pickups

Man o man what a WEEK for CBD! These pickups are a combination of Midtown Comic orders, visits to a LCS in Virginia and a couple of shops in L.A.

TGICBD 30 Jan 2013

Here's what I got

Hopefully I can make it to the Robert Kirkman signing at Earth-2 Comics tomorrow. If so, I'll have more pics!

Spawn #227 Sketch Variant 1:25

Mind MGMT #0 x 2, #1-#6 (ranging from VF to NM)

Amazing Spiderman #692 Decades Variants (via Ebay)
I just love these covers...don't care if they will go up or not...these are keepers!

Spiderman 2099 artwork on A vs X blank variant courtesy of Jason Adams

Nowhere Men #1 (2nd Print), Nowhere Men #2 (2nd Print) x 4

Saga #3-#4, #6-#9 (1st Print)
I'm tempted to go for a full run of these. I read Volume 1 (issues 1-6) and really like this story.

Todd the Ugliest Kid #1 x 4

Clone #1 (Adlard Variant)

Comeback #1-#3

Thanks for looking!

Surprisingly I found them on the store rack. This was at a store in Vienna, Virginia called Big Planet Comics. When I got back home to L.A., though, stores were wiped clean.

Default Invincible Signing Party @ Earth-2 Comics

I was able to make it out here for the signing event. Shout out to TheNewGuy for the info on this!

I arrived a little after an hour to wait in line. I finally got up to them with about 15 minutes left for the event. I was pretty happy.

More pics located here

They limited signings to five pieces, so I got a couple of Chromium variants that I sent to get the yellow label. One will be for PC and the other I'll probably sell. Then, I got these for my PC. I might send Invincible #50 to my cousin as a gift. He's a big fan of this series. Also, I'm going to try to get Marc Silvestri's signature on the issue 100 variant. I was able to get his sig and Kirkman's sig on the Walking Dead #100 Silvestri variant.

Walking Dead #104 signed by Robert Kirkman

Invincible #50 signed by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley

Invincible #100 Marc Silvestri variant

Congrats Pablo! That #50 looks awesome, I knew I should of bought it at Earth-2 when they were letting people buy stuff before the signing. Oh well, congrats!

Are you going to Earth-2's Geoff Johns signing next month for Justice League of America?

Thanks man! I've never been to that shop before, but everyone was really cool there.

The guy at Earth-2 mentioned the Geoff Johns signing. I need to see what my schedule is like since it's in Northridge. But I'd love to check it out!

If you are interested, there's an artists signing at Geoffrey's Comics next weekend featuring a good group of artists and inkers. As it turns out, Danny Miki used to work at that shop. (true story)

Default 2/13/13 Pickups

The hunt for Peter Panzerfaust #9 was on (and exhausting). 4 stores and 2 days later, I had 3 pretty decent copies in hand.

TGICBD 13 Feb 2013

Also working towards some sets of Todd the Ugliest Kid, so grabbed multiple copies of #2. I like that Danny Trejo wrote an introduction for the book.

I'm starting to pick up blank variants for artist works. My collection started with resident junkie, Jason Adams, and I'm picking up another book (Uncanny X-Force) by inker Danny Miki tomorrow.

I picked up these titles by James Asmus to get them signed at a local event next Wednesday. Anybody read these?

In addition to these, I picked up
Batman #17
Walking Dead #107
Clone #4
Secret Avengers #1 Baby Variant
Super Crooks #4 (L.A. people stop by the Comic Bug if you need this book)
Star Wars #1 (Virgin cover 2nd print)
Star Wars #2

Probably the best part of this week is that I'm starting to become a local at a few shops, so I'm getting to know the owners better. This will hopefully allow me to get some pull lists going with discounts and some access to hard to find books.

Default 2/20/13 Pickups

Today, The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach had a visit from writer James Asmus. He's currently writing The End Times of Bram and Ben, Gambit and just wrapped up a Thieve of Thieves run. I chatted with him for a while on Bram and Ben. It's a funny read if anyone is interested.

The End Times of Bram and Ben #1, #2 signed by James Asmus

Gambit #1 signed by James Asmus

My Little Pony Micro-Series Twighlight Sparkle #1 (daughter loves the "coloring book" cover)

Black Beetle #2 x 5 (This is a cool read btw and I love the art in this one)

Nova #1 Variants

JLA #1 (Americuh and Cali flags)

In addition to the pics, I also picked up:

Batwoman #17
Superior Spider-Man #4
Snapshot #1 (cover price)
Saga #10
Todd the Ugliest Kid #1 (2nd Print)

Man, you are so lucky to have a comic shop like that! Although if mine looked like that I'd have much lighter pockets

So you are going to let your daughter color that MLP, right?

LOL she's all ready to color that book. I bought two copies of it so she can color one of them.

All good man! Superior Spiderman was really good this week in my opinion. I grew up in Texas, so one of the LCS owners was going to try to grab the Texas flag. But no luck...the California flag book actually has a couple of spine bends, too. But he had special ordered that for me, so I couldn't turn it down. It'll be my reader copy.

Default 5/15/13 Pickups

I realized that I didn't stick to my word and use this thread to post any new pickups!

Today was more of the past week's mailday.

TGICBD 2013-05-15 Photos by pablogarzajr | Photobucket

First, I got the results of my first CGC submittal for books I dropped off at Wondercon. All 9.8s!

As an early birthday present, my sister and brother-in-law decided to spoil me with a CGC 9.2 The Walking Dead #3 and a CGC 9.8 Walking Dead #94 Image Expo variant!

My trip to the LCS involved meeting the creators of a book called Omega 1. The picture is with their limited variant cover. The creators, Mark Edward Lewis and Alina Andrei, work in the film industry and are trying to pitch it for a TV show. Hope it goes well for them!

And probably the most exciting pickup was my first silver age item: Avengers 54 and 55. I'm super excited about these.

Dude I seriously could not remove my eyes LOL. I think she could break cinder blocks with those abs. She works as a stunt woman, so she definitely has to be in shape to survive in that industry. But still made me say wowoweewow!

I read through the first issue and it was okay. It had a lot of action, but the story moved a bit too quickly for me. They cut me a deal for issues 1-4, so I'll read the other issues this weekend. I do like the concept for the story; data has to be moved through physical couriers because hacking has become so rampant. So these couriers are trained to protect the data at all costs.

Wink Stan Lee Mailday - CGC 9.8s!

After seeing JMeister's thread on all of his 9.8 CGC SS for Stan Lee, I have missed Fedex's delivery twice for mine. Talk about torture and anticipation of waiting for my books. Well, I finally got them today and I'm one happy camper.

Stan Lee Signing At Frank And Sons 2013 April 13 Photos by pablogarzajr | Photobucket

First, all 3 books signed by Stan Lee came back as 9.8s!!! The 70s variant on top is for my own PC. The 60s variant is going to my mom and dad, and I'm hoping the ASM #700 will pay for the grading order LOL.

And the 4th book I submitted also got a 9.8! This is My Little Pony #3 Retailer Incentive with a cover featuring the "cutest" ponies presented by J. Scott Campbell. I still remember asking Campbell if he had signed any of these books, and he had not. Debating whether to keep or sell this one... (freakin' ponies)

As far as pickups this week, I didn't go too crazy. I really enjoyed reading Young Avengers #5 and Batman Li'l Gotham #2, though. The writing and dialogue between the characters in YA is just great, and I like Loki's attitude. Li'l Gotham is just a good, wholesome read with some good artwork. Both titles are highly recommended.

He's got some good ones for sure. I'm looking forward to picking up his X-Men #1 variant this week.

I forgot to post this one up. This is an old comic of mine that I got in the mail recently. The overall value isn't crazy high, but as a kid seeing Spider-Man team up with the Autobots to bring down Megatron was about as awesome as seeing a T-Rex flying a fighter jet.

Default My Little Pony Party @ Metropolis Comics

Metropolis Comics in Bellflower, CA held a My Little Pony Party featuring NOT 1, NOT 2, BUT 3 MLP artists! I took my daughter to meet them and to have some fun. Along with the signings, the store had raffles for MLP prize packs some rare covers provided by IDW. Each artist volunteered to lead a drawing class, too. And free cake at the end.

Here's a link to the album if anybody wants to check out the pics.

MLP Party - Metropolis Comics Photos by pablogarzajr | Photobucket

First pickups were from Tony Fleecs who has penciled many of the variant covers. He did the Twilight Sparkle sketch for free for my daughter.

He had his portfolio there too including the original art for the San Diego Comic-Con 2013 exclusive.

Amy Mebberson who did the pencils for the Midtown variants and a few issues was also in house. My daughter was nice enough to pick up a sketch for her friend (also for free!)

And Thomas Zahler was also in house who wrote and penciled one of the micro-series issues. He sketched Twilight Sparkle as Rogue on a blank X-Men #1 (the all girls issue). It wasn't free but very reasonable price.

Overall it was a great day. My daughter had a blast, and the party ended with cake and a prize!
