Default Best "Investment" Book for around $1K

I know I know... I should buy what I like. Well thankfully, right now all of the books I like are still relatively cheap.

If you had to pick a book that has a lot of potential, which book would it be and why?

Should I go Silver Age, like Fantastic Four 48, or Iron Man 55, X-Men 4?

Should I go Copper Key like Bone 1 or ASM 300?

Should I keep saving my money for a mega key?

hulk 181 imo too big a run up and doesn't have far to go

i like daredevil 1-top top choice for me and one of my favorite characters(full disclosure i have a few)
hulk 271
tales of suspense 57-has had a big run up but compared to the other avengers books is still way cheap

there's a few more just can't think of them right now, somebody should just make a list and keep it on here

Silver Age and Bronze Age keys.

For 1k you can buy a low grade Marvel #1 like X-Men or Daredevil. Even a Tales of Suspense 39 and Avengers 1. I would personally buy high grade Silver and Bronze Age minor key issues. You can hold on to them for a few years and once a while, those minor keys become big ones. Since they are relatively cheap, you can afford high grade copies. You'll get a better return on them in the long run instead of buying one big book. It's always nice to have a FF 1 or AF 15 but unless it's high grade, your return will be minimal. Or just buy what you like.

The answer to this question lies in the question "what major character's first appearance or what series has the best chance to gain steam via movies or TV show above their current levels?"

We all know that the major Avengers will be in several more movies, so as far as The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the other team members already shown in the movies; they won't sneak up on anyone investment-wise. Their key books will steadily go up with each movie, but someone like The Black Panther could sneak onto the team in the movies and see a HUGE increase in price. We have seen the first appearance of Ultron and Bishop go way up with their announcements as major characters, so anyone Marvel introduces as a key will go up in value at a much higher rate.

As a comic shop owner, both Deadpool and Harley Quinn are ridiculously requested characters for their toys, new series and whatnot. New Mutants 98 seems much rarer than ASM 300, and can jump way over it in value with a movie officially announced. Harley's first appearance is in Catwoman #6 I believe, probably pretty short-printed and she is a cult hero of all young female comic collectors as well a lot of guys.

If you're jut looking for an investment and it has to be just one book for around a grand, Iron Man 55 has lost some steam since Avengers 2 became about Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy just has Thanos as a coach more than a player (which is exactly what happens in every comic, he doesn't battle until after much scheming), but everyone overlooks that it is also the first appearance of Drax (who should get a ton of hype and airtime in GotG since it is Dave Bautista). If it's an investment with about five books for a grand, buy a sweet copy of Think Tank #1, Saga #1 RRP, Saga #6 CGC 9.8, 1st app. Black Panther, 1st App. Carnage, 1st app. Deadpool, X-Men #129, etc.

If the OP is actually gonna throw $1K down on some stuff, I would love to hear the end result with scans.

Yeah, it might be more fun to diversify and get more titles and give yourself more opportunity instead of sinking it all into one book.

I got one big key book for around 1k that will climb in years to come IMO. Giant size x-men #1 in high grade. In this book you have second appearance of Wolverine, first nightcrawler, storm, colossus, and thunderbird and its the first appearance of the new team. That would be my pick if you just wanted to grab one book for the price.

My 2 cents

For safe but moderate growth, buy blue chip silver age low grades.

For explosive growth, speculate on potential appearance in future avengers movie. Sorry to cite my own blog again but I have already done the research on 60s and 70s avenger members and who among them have not made an appearance. You can read it for reference if you want.

I bought this book in 7.0 for $300 10 years ago. I think it is worh $400-$500 today so great returns. What grade did you buy in?

I like how Jason said X-Men #129. Maybe because I just bought a high grade copy the other month. But X-Men #129 and #130 are good picks that will leave you a lot of extra money to play with. I only see Dazzler going up in price because she hasn't been in anything yet.

I definitely agree with X-Men 129. It features first appearances of 2 major X-Men characters. I think it's actually an undervalued book right now with only room to grow. Also, Avengers Annual 10 can be had at a very reasonable price in high grade.

I would say either a Tales to Astonish 27 (low grade) or Tales to Astonish 35 (mid-high grade)

Overall the book i see increasing the most for the short term is Fantastic Four 52.

If I had to make the choice right now I would go for a good copy of ASM 129 and that will give you some cash to spare if you shop around.

First appearance of The Punisher.
