With the success of Panzerfast, I truly thought Rat Queens would have a higher print run than that by about 4,000 or so.

It's a quality little book and a fun read. It has a flow very similar to Saga in terms of ease and keeping the story clipping along. What was Saga's first print run? 30K?

Give Rat Queens time. Panzer didn't take off until late in the series, issues 6ish-7 - I think Rat Queens will appeal to a much BROADer audience. Pardon the pun.

I wonder if demand will go up for those lower printed 3D's now that people are aware of them?

As expected (to me anyway) both WW books were fairly low... more Harley's than I expected...

Ok, I now have some questions:

1) How do multiple covers work? For example, Zero #1 had 4 covers (which includes a Phantom variant) and the print run states 20,352. Is that per cover? Each? How does the variant fit in this situation?

2) What does an asterisk mean next to the issue #? For example, #205 is Sidekick #2*, print run 14,522.

3) Saga #13 had a print run of 5,079? And #14 was 55,585? What?

Any and all help in this is much appreciated!

AFAIK that is the estimate but the print run was 25K. It is likely the rest went to the EU. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think Comichron shows US sales only.

Variants are bundled into one entry, so that 20,352 is the total for everything. Unless one has a different cover price, when often it is broken out into its own listing. The DC 3D/2D situation this month was unique and resulted in separate listings.

This is explained in the fine print to the left of my estimates page. An asterisk means the comic book was returnable for credit by retailers if they didn't sell it, and so in fairness, the number reported is reduced (usually by 10%) from the number shipped. Remember, these are not print runs, but the number of copies ordered; none of the non-returnable copies are ever going back to Diamond, so the fair thing is to adjust the returnable books downward. If they actually do sell out, we see those additional copies reported in the next month.

These aren't print runs. They're the number of copies that Diamond shipped to retailers in the month. That 5,079 refers to copies of the book that were reordered by retailers this month. It is not the total number of copies in circulation.

I recommend clicking through to the original page -- it has on the left-hand column a "fine print" section that details how the numbers are arrived at and what's included and not included. You may also find this FAQ post helpful, which gets into more detail about what the numbers are and what they aren't.

I was always curious, how does the newsstand versions play out. Many times they are a different price than the direct versions. So are they listed and bundled as one entry too? As with the 3D and 2D new 52 versions are listed separately. The newsstand versions are 2D but have the 3D $3.99 price so where would they be listed? 3D or 2D entry?

TIA

If the newsstand versions are offered to the Direct Market (they often aren't), we tend to see them broken out more often than not -- again, presuming there's a different price. But variant versions with the same price tend to be combined these days.

The practice has changed back and forth over the years. Diamond is trying to balance a lot of interests. Publishers want to have sales combined so they get higher rankings -- and smaller publishers don't want a bunch of variants pushing their books off the charts -- so lately they tend toward combining (unless it makes no sense, as in the case of books with wildly different prices). It's true that collectors have come to rely on the charts to see how many copies might be in circulation of various versions, but that is not Diamond's real audience or intention with this stuff. It's PR for the publishers and a guide to retailers as to how things are selling relative to each other.

Here's how I believe this worked this month, based on what I've heard: The original offer was 3D versions for $3.99; DC's printer did not have cover paper for all the copies ordered, and so a portion of the sales of each title went into "Standard" 2D returnable versions at $2.99. These have a different order code and are listed separately in the charts.

Didn't know the newsstand version was $3.99, but if so, then the "Standard" version is not it, and I don't see that there was a Diamond order code by which retailers could order a $3.99 2D version. Not saying there wasn't one, but I can't find it on PreviewsWorld -- and if it wasn't offered through Diamond, obviously, it wouldn't appear in these charts. Newsstand is handled by a whole different bunch of distributors and it's anybody's guess how many exist of their versions.
