Thanks!
They're really not an American creation. Cigarette cards have a very long history in Europe, especially in the UK.
Panini has put out World Cup stickers for over 40 years in Europe (as well as multi-sport sticker sets), so they know how to market there.
I expect there will also be a substantial Asian market for this set.

Do the UK cigarette cards sell like ours do, though? And are there modern ones? And is the industry (with numerous price segments and different sports) as large as ours? I was referring more to the market as the creation rather than the product, I guess. I wasn't very clear in my word choice.

Well, I figured Europe because a LOT of the top players play there. I am also curious to see if this reaches a few of the South American countries, such as Argentina...can't see them not wanting Messi cards, if he's in the set.

The vintage card market in Europe is fairly active, but the cards are common enough that they're normally not too expensive (adults collected, so nobody's mom threw them out and they were kept in good shape). Nowadays, cards there are still issued with products such as tea (Brooke Bond, in the UK, seems to be the biggest producer), and are often nonsports. It's not as large a business as ours.

Can someone explain how a hit draft works? I'd be interested in 5 slots, maybe more. Thanks

We open all the boxes, then draft the hits one at a time. Top of the draft order to the bottom.
