Ebay Seller "in the hospital"... WWYD ?

What would you do ?

Bought a topps chrome red refractor(ser#/25) on
10/30 on ebay for just under 15 shipped.

Write to seller yesterday saying "card has not arrived as yet, which is ok, but I noticed it hasnt been marked shipped and am wondering if/when you are going to send. Please advise"

get the following reply

Good Morning,Just giving you a updated, I have been in the hospital since last Thursday, I'm in need of a heart bypass. i will mail your card when I get out or issue you a refund. Please LMK

Since the time Seller states he was in the hospital, several other people who purchased items on same day as I, HAVE received their stuff. Another has left a neutral noting seller refunded due to medical issue. Additionally, the seller has listed quite a few items since that time, including several the same day he wrote to say "in the hospital". It IS possible these are auto relist items.

In 4.5 years of online trading and ebay buying I have never encountered this personally,
and it genuinely bothers me to feel doubt about someones health,

but I've seen so many of these claims on this board that I cant help but wonder.

If this is just a story, it stands to reason seller will continue to come up with reasons he cant send. If its NOT a story, seller might be in for a long stay and may have to refund 3 weeks from now anyway.

so

Should I be understanding and wait a few more weeks ?
Or just take the refund.
(note that I have not seen another of this particular card come up since)

If refund what feedback should I leave for seller ?
pos/neutral/neg/none at all

What would you do ?

I would just ask for the refund. It's easier for both sides. He doesn't have to worry about sending out another card and you no longer have to worry about getting the card.

Either he's in the hospital or he isn't.

If he is, and you ask for a refund, he can issue it to you now. Then, when he's out of the hospital, he could still sell you the card. But if something more serious happens, you don't have to haggle with the next of kin.

If he isn't in the hospital and he's lying to you, then you're best off getting the refund and being done with the guy.

As for feedback, you don't have to leave any at all, and you can wait something like 60 days before you do.

If you want the card give it a month, otherwise ask for a refund. I wouldn't leave any feedback either way.

Guy probably is lying but not worth damaging their feedback on a hunch. I imagine you wouldn't feel to great if you found it was true and left Neutral or Negative.

i had this happen to me...... i was injured and spent some time in the hospital. luckily, my girlfriend at the time was kind enough to ship things out for me.

Since the first post, I have noticed that he as listed a total of 40 items since the time he says he was in the hospital. Of these only about 5 are relists, and the rest are new, so my suspicion that he is just full of bull is even stronger now. Have pointed this out to him and asked for a refund OR a tracking# by close of business Monday. Based on this, if I am refunded, I will likely leave a neutral.

Under $15 I would wait. Just make sure you file before the 45 days is up.

Monday is a Holiday........ so he may be able to print a label (if that's how he does it) but it won't ship until Tuesday.

Never mind last post of mine. With this information get the refund and leave neg not neutral. Apparently he is lying through his teeth if you do in fact receive either quickly.

Yes , I most likely would have taken him at face value and believed he was sick. I most likely would have just immediately taken the refund, and not bothered to look at whether or not he had listed new items.

Also..

Yes, were it not for having heard of such things fairly regularly as a result of being on several boards, it may never have even occurred to me that there are people who actually fabricate major health issues to weasel out of a trade, purchase/sale, or excessive shipping delay.

The truly sad part of it is, as a result of such liars,
people who ARE genuinely ill or have a death in the family etc,
are looked upon with doubt, when it simply happens to coincide with a deal.

Man illness rates for Ebay sellers are staggering. Forget text messaging and driving, Ebay selling is the leading cause of preventable hospitalization in this country.

I would have suggested benefit of the doubt until you mentioned he's been listing. Happened to a lot of us through the years on Ebay.
