Since we started having to pay federal income tax on paypal payments, my accountant told me I should register my ebay store as a business which I did for this past fiscal year. Yesterday I received an odd message from a buyer who purchased a card of mine...
He asked me to reinvoice him without sales tax because he was a registered NJ dealer. I asked him to explain what he meant and why that matters and he sent this... "I have a sales tax exemption certificate from the state of New Jersey for purchases of sports memorabilia which includes autographs all of which I re-sell. I can attach an ST-3 to an email for your files if you feel you need one. If you make retail sales to clients in NJ you are obligated to collect and remit NJ State sales tax which you are hopefully doing." Can someone help explain this further to me. Am I not supposed to charge this guy sales tax? -James

Since he is gonna resell the item, and also has a tax id for reporting sales tax himself as a business you do not charge him the tax. When a business buys from a supplier for resale they do not pay tax to the supplier. Nothing shady about it.
