I'm curious to know how COMC stores their cards?

Is it by seller? or is it
by year/sport/brand/etc......
I do not know this, but I would think it would be by seller since you get the EXACT card seen in the scans. However, if it is by seller, I wonder if they physically move the cards every time a card is sold, but delivery is not requested. Who knows though. Hopefully Tim stops by here again and can chime in on some of the new ideas.

That would make sense. But then again I think it would slow down the process of pulling the cards. JMO.

I think Matt brought it up a while ago that they should just have stock photos so they don't have to worry about the "exact card" from the seller. If that makes sense.

no way. i like to be able to see the exact card im getting. besides.. being able to see a close up of the card has prevented me from buying damaged cards.

It wasn't this Matt that suggested this. I think they should get the exact card they are bidding on.

I also think how they store cards is proprietary information, and they are not going to tell us how to do it.

Lastly, if a store owner has 500,000 to 1 million of cards to search through, they are still all his and probably organized into sports, years, products, sets, etc. I think how COMC does it varies considerably from this as there are so many sellers and lots of multiples of many cards. They ship you the exact card you won, so it would take a lot of time to find and pull each card. At least how I'm thinking they do it.

I wonder if the Item # has anything to do with the order in which they are stored. Otherwise, what would the purpose of an Item # be?

I would hope item number has something to do with it. If they are storing the cards by owner, that would lead to a lot of unnecessary work constantly moving around cards that are being "flipped" from one account to the other. It sounds to me like however they are currently doing things, isn't the optimal way. I think hiring a 3rd party consultant would do them a lot of good since it seems to me like most of their experience has to do with developing technology as opposed to running a business. Getting an outside perspective from a professional company trained to improve businesses could do the company a world of good.

I think part of the problem regarding COMC is the approach that a lot of seller's have taken to using the site. I can say that I have read every post regarding COMC since it got going on here. Generally, the consensus has been that people are thrilled to get rid of stuff that has been sitting around a long time. Makes sense.

What I do not understand is "pricing strategy" of sellers. While I understand we all want to get cash as quick as possible.... why give the stuff away? All the complaints regarding ebay and people dumping stuff...comc has become the same thing only with less work for the seller.

Many ebay sellers ask $3 shipping charges for a card. Comc after the 1st is .25 per. Personally, I think it makes more sense, since the shipping is lower when you get into the more than one card scenario on comc, to ask a bit more for the card knowing that it would in many cases be more on ebay. Many times we are selling to individual player collectors.....if I guy wants to come on and buy 10 cards from 10 sellers.....$5.25 shipping is not that bad. He can't do that on ebay. Additionally, with many card shops closing over the years, there are not a lot of places for buyers to go for their cards...unless they are fortunate enough to be able to attend local shows. I am sure many buyers come from other countries....rural areas, etc. where they do not have easy access. Obviously these are generalizations...but...

Here is an example...I was thinking of sending in some baseball cards. They were only available back in the day buying boxes of cereal...may have also been a mail in for the whole set..not sure. Anyways not a real common item. Somewhat unique. Currently on comc, there are Hall of Famers for, in many cases, less than .50. A player collector will certainly pay more for something that is different, unique, rare, etc. I see this constanly on comc.

I lived in Minneapolis until 2 years ago. Minneapolis had terrible card shows. I remember going to several and buyers were going nuts over display cases of cards that were marked 70% off Beckett. COMC has tons of stuff that is 80% and 90% off. As a seller, why mark stuff 90% off and pay 20% commissions.....? Just to move it this week instead of next month. I would rather sell it next month or so and make another 10-20%.

I have had some excellent sales lately of the same player going to the same buyer. In a lot of cases, they are not even negotiating and have paid 50% of book and more. Same is true on low and older higher priced cards(still usually stuff under $10).

I don't claim to have the answers...this is just my rant. Curious as to know other's thoughts....

I do agree that more would sell quicker if the pricing were more consistent with actual shipping as opposed to the labor involved in the process. I just do not think it as big a factor as we might think....I could be wrong.

I agree 100%. I get a lot of low ball offers. I get a lot of emails, (daily), about people telling me how much stuff is selling on Ebay and how I should accept lower offers. Most people are real nice about it, and I politely tell them that if I wanted to get those types of prices, I'd sell on Ebay. There's a reason I don't sell on Ebay.

I accept all reasonable offers. I'm not right all the time with the pricing of my cards, but for 12 pennies a year, I'll let them sit there before I sell for a lot less than what I want to get out of them.

I suggested to Tim on Friday that there should be a discounted shipping when buyers purchase multiple cards from one seller. He said he would keep it in mind. I think it is obvious that the cards are stored by sellers. If that is the case, then the cost to pull multiple cards from one seller should be drastically cheaper. The key to the discount would be how they pull the cards, are they pulled as they are sold or only when they are actually sent out.
Another idea I have is to greatly reduce the shipping cost to people that only buy, maybe maintain the old rates for them with the $25 max shipping rate.

For those that think an employee making $9 an hour only cost that, think again. They are likely costing closer to $15 an hour depending on if they are getting any benefits, possibly more.
