I had an idea that they might store their cards by batch #. Obviously the batch number is limited to an individual seller, and this would also explain why they charge $3/batch. They need the $3 to purchase storage boxes for the batch. Whether the card is bought and sold 10 times they can look up to see that item number 537452 was in batch number 64162. Not sure if this is feasible, but in idea regardless.
