This week we finally caught up on shipping for the first time since last November. We have had 2-4 people working on shipping for the past 6 months. We have invested many, many thousands of dollars into optimizing the shipping process so that we can now stay on top of shipping.

Now that we have our current shipping process under control, we can consider making some changes that might increase demand on our shipping service. We have heard your desires to have a reduced shipping fee for shipping hundreds of cards, and we have been going over some different options. Let me know what you think of this proposal for a new budget shipping service.

Budget Shipping
- $20 for the first 100 cards
- $10 for each additional 100 cards
- Orders packaged on the first day of every month
- Cards purchased for $20+ are shipped in toploaders
- All other cards are securely packaged in boxes without penny selves

How does that sound?

We would need to hear from the buyers to be sure. The one thing that sticks out to me is shipping them only once a month. I think every other week would be more reasonable, maybe 1st and 3rd Monday of the month.

Thank you for coming back to the forum to discuss this issue.

My first question would be, what does the statement I've bolded mean? Does this mean all cards marked to be shipped will automatically be gathered and shipped on the first of each month? Or that all bulk orders will be processed on the 1st of the month regardless of when the order is placed? Or something else? I think there could be some potential issues there depending on what the statement means.

As far as the price structure goes, I think its an improvement over the current structure... but it still leaves the basic issue I and others are concerned about when it comes to bulk orders of stay 400-500 cards. From a buyers perspective, if they are spending $50-60 in shipping for an order that costs around $10-$12 in postage to ship, they are going to feel ripped off. Granted, not as much as the current $75-85 an order like that would cost, but even under the proposed adjustment that is still 4-5 times the shipping cost. Not to mention the fact that it probably isn't likely that the shipping speed for bulk orders like this is going to improve much if at all if the shipping fees drop. I don't think shipping speed would be much of an issue to a buyer paying closer to actual shipping costs, but it is likely to further frustrate a buyer who is paying $50-$60 for an order that likely comes to them in a $10 flat rate box.

Now I know your stance is that your actual shipping costs include the cost of paying your employees for the time it takes them to pull cards and package them for an order, and with these bulk orders that can end up being a substantial cost. But what I and many others would argue is that these costs are of no relevance from a buyers perspective, and making the buyer shoulder this burden is leading to fewer sales, especially when it comes to low priced cards on the site.

We as sellers are paying for full consignment services. That process includes sorting, identifying, booking, scanning, and listing the cards we send in to the site. But it doesn't end there. It also includes pulling cards that have sold and preparing them for sale. Without this process, sellers would not be receiving a full consignment service. Therefore, I think the costs involved with pulling and preparing cards we've sold to be shipped should be shouldered by the sellers. Perhaps the current seller fee structure does not allow for that, but it should. It's part of the process, and I don't think any seller could have much ground to complain about shouldering these costs as selling their cards is an essential part of what each and every seller is trying to do by sending cards to your company.

And if the sellers were shouldering these costs, it would allow you to offer the buyer shipping prices that simply cover your costs of postage and shipping materials. Which basically means a shipping cap could be restored (perhaps even lower than before if sellers were covering the labor costs) which in turn would mean any buyer would be free to buy whatever they wanted without shipping prices being a factor. Meaning lower priced cards especially would start flying off the site. Buyers would be happier which should lead to more overall use of the site... which leads to happier sellers... etc.

Again, I think all users of the site would benefit from this kind of change to the shipping structure, including sellers. So I don't see why any seller would have an issue paying a little more to help take the shipping cost burden off the buyer. This should especially be the case when you consider the costs that are causing the shipping prices to be so high are costs associated with the consignment process itself... and that is what we as sellers are supposed to be paying for.

Tim,

How about the concept of shipping discount/coupon for people who spend bigger Dollars on COMC? Say if somebody spends $200 then they receive a discount of $5-$10 total budget shipping fees.

I am in favor of passing on more of the shipping cost to the seller with possibly a cost per card sold. We definitely want to sell more and have cards leave the site to happy customers.

I am encouraged that COMC is caught up on shipping orders. The sellers are "Outsourcing" the fulfillment process to you and I know that there was frustration/fear when the shipment lead times grew to several weeks which is not competitive in the collectible market place.

How is the recruitment of new COMC Buyers and Sellers going? Will your crew be travelling to this year's National in Cleveland? Last year in Chicago I quietly grabbed one of your coupons and surfed the site when I got home and was hooked.

Can you please provide us some feedback on how you are doing in working through the mountain of pre March 30th selling submissions and how the Express and Priority Services are working. Thanks!

I am not against them just using the first of the month as a sending date. I do think they should lower prices still a little bit. I agree with the thought that if you pay more for the cards, you should have a discount. They could work on this in a more individual way. Make the customers still feel like they matter some. I am sure that was attractive at one point for everyone.
