Default Brother QL-700 Thermal Printer - should I buy?

These are on sale at Staples this week for $40 - questions I have are:

1) do they print Paypal shipping labels?

2) are the labels available in bulk anywhere - Staples prices looked like about $0.10/per for 300, which would not be cost-effective based on my normal margin for a typical low-end ebay sale.

3) Is it worth it to buy a more expensive model?

Any insights from sellers welcomed!

You can find the QL 500 for $69.00. A better printer IMO. I'm not sure why the 700 is so cheap.

You can't beat this with a stick. I would order this now. Not kidding. I paid $99 for mine.

Amazon.com: Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer: Office Products

Just noticed the $29 shipping, but still a great price.

+1 to this. Also, buy the compatible labels rather than the Brother brand to lower your per label cost. You just have to modify the spool.

It is awesome unless you have a MAC. They say it is compatible but it wont work.

$40 seems like a hell of a deal for the 700, or should I say, that would be a super sick mojo amazing Bryce Harper Mike Trout mega mail day eBay 1/1 steal, if you bought it.

Seriously, though, that's a steal at $40. I've got the 500, and love it!

I'm using the DYMO 4XL, and it works fantastic, but the labels are $0.168 each in bulk. That is the price of true DYMO labels, not generic. It is one of the most expensive materials cost in my card business.

I've tried using generic non-DYMO labels and had very bad experiences with the label coming off slightly at the edges. The label doesn't come off completely but the edges peal off slightly and I worry that the edge might rip during transit and the bar code of address is destroyed or something like that.

Can anyone say positively that the generic labels for the Brother printer do not have problems with pealing and such?

Thanks,

Alex

I've yet to experience any issues, and I've printed well over 100.

I've been looking at the Brother QL-570 series, but after searching around the forum, I've seen several posts (include your's) indicating that something is wrong with the compatibility with Mac's.

So being a Mac user, should I put my thoughts on buying a thermal printer on hold? Or, is there an alternative that I'm not yet privy to?

Anybody find out if this will work with a MAC? I bought one without doing complete research and it doesn't print right. Hopefully there is a trick!

There is not. This is what I have preached about this printer. It says it is compatible and it does work, it just doesn't print the label correctly as the problem lyes within britney Powes software.

Just an update...

I went ahead and purchased a ql-700 thermal printer. Everything hooked up fine until I went to print a label. Unfortunately, it looks like I need an updated version of Java to be able properly print the label on my label maker. However, I'm still running on Tiger (Mac OS X v10.5) and supposedly need to upgrade to Lion (Mac OS X v10.7) in order to be able to use the update supplied by Java. So I've yet to seen the printer label attempt to print anything using my Mac.

I do have a Mini Microsoft Notebook that runs Windows 7 and works perfectly with the ql-700. However, I would prefer to have it work with my Mac, as it's my everyday computer.

Do you have a photo of the print error?

Are you guys selecting "ql-550 continuous" in the printing format?
