Default 1997 Upper Deck Legends box/pack price?

Hello all,

1997 Upper Deck Legends is pretty much the greatest set ever. I am curious what a box or an individual pack would sell for? I cannot find these unopened anywhere. I could not find them on ebay current listings or sold listings or completed or PWCC or any major card dealers.

I am curious what you guys think a single pack would sell for from an unopened box or what an unopened box would run?

BBCE had a retail box (I think 2 autos per box) for the longest time at $400, but it looks like they sold it recently

I remember seeing retail boxes in clam shells at Kmart around 1999-2000 for $29.99. I think retail still had 2 autos per box. I laughed at them wanting so much for an older product and grabbed some $9.99 mixed pack blasters instead.

I made many foolish choices in life...

I did the same thing! I didnt collect basketball at all. Really nobody that I knew did so I wouldnt be able to trade. I remember seeing the packs stacked up loose at the bottom of the display. Each with a $.99 sticker slashed to like $0.33 or something.

I passed and grabbed 89 topps since I was looking for more copies of the Will Clark card. The cool picture of him leaning on a bat. That was the bomb!

Ok, I confess I had an ulterior motive in making this thread. This arrived in the mail today:

Did some research and these are called "special retail packs." Different than regular retail packs. Auto odds on hobby were 1:5, retail 1:10 and these are 1:7. Full box with 80 packs. I have searched for days and can't find another example of unopened product anywhere in the interwebs. I am stoked!

If I remember correctly, Walmart sold the retail packs at $6.97 a pack when they were released.

I am SOOOOOOOOO Jelly of you dude!

Are you going to crack or have them graded?

Can you get another one? I'd either be a buyer or would split one with you.

Great stuff. Only opened hobby back in the day but great find.

One warning, several of the big hits were redemptions. I know Unitas was because they screwed me and said we're out here's a game jersey instead.

In the up side a few of the never filled redemptions like luckman sell for big $ to us set collectors.

Good luck!

Why aren't these open already?

As for redemptions, maybe a collector would pay for them? Or you can put them in the UD raffle.

This was an incredibly lucky find and trust me, the first question I asked was "do you have more?" Unfortunately the answer was negative. I would have bought them all.

Thanks! I tried to find a list of redemptions but could not, which is strange to me. Anyone have any leads?

**You must read the following in the 30 for 30 promo voice**

What if I told you...a man once found a complete box of 1997 Upper Deck Legends special retail factory packs while searching online in the early morning hours and he paid less $2.00 a pack...and they were actually delivered to his door.

I appreciate all the great comments by everyone. This is truly a rare, rare find. The more research I do, the more I realize that you simply cannot find this stuff unopened, in any form, anywhere. Unfortunately, I think this is one of those products that is worth more unopened than it is worth opening. I mean, there a few cards worth a few grand for sure, but from everything I'm reading the chances of hitting an SP are pretty slim and I'm pretty sure I can get more for this box as a whole than one of those cards would sell for even if you hit one. At least I think so.

The biggest bummer for me is that the box itself was actually in perfect, mint condition. The seller who obviously knows nothing about cards or selling, wrote my address and put tape all over the factory box itself, rather than double boxing. Kind of a bummer.

At that price, you win either way. It seems you could sell the base cards off and make your money back.

Some call it luck, others call it searching day after day after day after day to find that needle in the hay stack.

In this case, it was pretty much luck

Outstanding find! I love stories like this, or of cases found in storage unit auctions, or discovered long forgotten unopened boxes in attics and the like.

Alright, so now that we know these blisters still exist what are my bids on their value?

$100 a blister ($50 per pack)?

I assume we will have 3 shoppers. Those that will bust looking for high grades to submit. Those that collect the set and would want to keep a sealed pack to display along with it. And those that will buy to hold looking for future value on something rare.

I have been going back and forth on this and honestly I don't think I'll know until I list them. As I have googled I found some discussion on other message boards from around 2012 which mention hobby boxes going for around $600 at the time. That would put hobby packs at around $30 at the time (of course I'm sure there was premium for a full box). I was thinking of maybe asking $75 per blister, but again I don't know if people are going to shell out $37.50 per pack for this stuff. The auto odds are great (1:7) but the odds of hitting a huge card are not. Also, I am really trying to gauge whether the best value here for me is just to keep it as a full box. Obviously, in other realms full boxes contain a premium. These are interesting because they are blisters, but because I have the original box stating 40 blisters are included and there are 40 in there it seems like maybe that is my best bet.

I am also trying to figure out if this is something I should just tuck away for another 10 years as I could see this stuff continuing to climb. At that point, clearly the sealed product becomes more valuable than the cards themselves. These cards also have a special place in my heart as 1997 was the last year of my "childhood" collecting before I returned as a adult. I remember busting many packs of this stuff and pulling 3 autos including a Fran Tarkenton. I have always loved this set which makes this find that much more special. I am open to people's thoughts. And again, I did NOT make this thread to put a for sale sign out (thanks mods for your understanding). Just a really cool find.

I would think the whole PSA graded card registry would have driven up the prices for sealed packs like this as prospectors have nothing else to open looking for high grade.

Most of the Legends autos that are out there now have been passed around a few times so high grades are tough to find.

I also think sealed blisters would sell better than loose packs. Way harder to reseal these blisters VS a standard hobby pack. Plus these present much nicer for those that want to keep them sealed and displayed!

And selling one at a time is the way to go. You'll get much more that way. Put one on eBay BIN $99 or BO and gauge the market. Dont show a picture of all of the other packs. Let buyers assume this might be the last blister in the world.

See what you get!

Just don't try to sell them on here and you shouldn't have any problem.

The money you have into them makes this a guaranteed win no matter what you do.
