Card price trend

I was just wondering how does the card prices work? I heard the card's highest price that it will ever get is when its first released. It will then flucuate over time, but it will never be at high as it was first released. The only exception to this is if this person becomes a superstar. Is this true? I am a little bump out because I have decided to collect a set during the off season, and now, it has already lost about 1/3 or so of its value. =(

Yeah this is true. Best time to sell is when the product first comes out, best time to buy is during the offseason imo
