Default Topps Five Star on ebay

Looks like five star is popping up on ebay. Initial thoughts of pros and cons, and somewhere in between (just my opinion based on the cards I have seen so far on ebay):

- Design is nice, I am sure they loook even better in person.
- A lot of jerseys instead of patches for rookie "patch" cards, as well as book cards. Last year most book cards had at least 2 windows with patches. Again, not so many yet on ebay, but would have thought more patches in books as well as rookie patch cards.
- They have redemptions. Not so cool in a box which cost almost $500
- Rookie patch windows are square (not round like last year) so they seem slightly bigger than last year patch windows.
- At least the jumbo jersey cards are being called jumbo relic cards and not jumbo patch like last year
- A bit of whiting and chipping on corners and edges, like supreme. Somewhat to be expected with thicker cards, and high gloss finish
- All in all, seems to be sold out in most stores around here, and there seems to be a lot of interest. Will have to wait and see actual prices on ebay to guage how much interest...

I had originally preordered 5 cases of this but when I saw the cards that Stevan Ridley had signed I quickly canceled that order because I saw nothing but solid color Jerseys.

There is just no excuse for this on a high end product.

I totally agree. When a product is $600 per box there is no excuse for single colored jersey pieces on a card like the Dalton booklet. I hear people rag on Panini all the time but they had sick patches in R&S which is a $70-80 product. Even Topps had sick patches in Inception at $80-90 per box. FAIL I say FAIL!

I agree completely. Then again, as long as people support Topps doing this by buying the product, they'll keep pumping out the same crap.

By the way, I agree with the negativity surrounding this break. While I'll take a Topps product over a Panini product every day of the week, the last two Topps football releases (this and Precision) are massive let-downs. My case of Five Star had a redemption in each box - this is the crap we bash Panini for. That and the fact that 3rd year Peyton Hillis and Jamal Charles autos are in the product is a bit of a middle finger from Topps.

Have two cases ordered for Wednesday paid 2700 total, I don't think I'll make 1000 on the product.

Yeah, I wanted to know if I was alone in thinking that overall this is definitely not going to be the football product of the year. I'm sticking with NT. Rookie patches in NT are ummm PATCHES. Also, the chipping whiting and flaking seems to be worse on Five Star, than National treasures cards. Not a Topps basher. In fact, I was planning on busting a few cases of this stuff. But, unless I see some major changes in the cards posted on ebay overnight, I am going to stay far away from this product. One color booklet? Even Marquee usually has one window out of 4 with a patch! Where is Topps putting all of those patch pieces?

what are the odds, nothing against you or the idea of the card. It's just really sloppy...I guess that's what happens when you have a guy that's a member of YMCMB sign cards

The Von Miller should sell for a decent amount, but it looks like he had a seizure while signing! All in all seems like Topps QC did not do their job on this product.

It's the "second year rule" with Topps. I forgot to stick to it, but if you look at the recent patterns, a Topps product that surprises everyone in the first year of its release will almost assuredly be an over-produced let down the next year. The really cranked the presses this year. Last year's base was #'d /79 or something. This year the base is #'d to 129. That's almost double the print run.

Yeah someone recently told me about the second year rule. Bait and switch. people pre order based on last year, and they give a totally different product this year instead. I assumne there will be some nicer cards eventually coming up on ebay, but just hard to be impressed so far with anything I have seen. I should have kept last year's 5 star cards...

all topps puts is single color jersey swatches in their super low numbered cards

its pathetic, and yet with every release its more of the same

ill be staying away from this product big time, and just wait for NT

Five Star is a joke for high end, it is not even close to NT. I like the design this year vs last I will admit. However they did not address the small patch windows on the RPAs which is a huge turn off to me. And as mentioned in this thread the plain white jsy in a "high end" product is a slap in the face of anyone who collects.

I see the value of this tanking yet again this year after 1-2 months, especially after NT is released, there is no comparison...and that Von Miller looks like a 2 year old scribbling on paper, wow, how did Topps QC not look at that and say, whoa Von, start over and open your eyes this time..........WOW

Did people not learn their lesson after watching Five Star nose dive last year? POTY or not, it has little to no value when considering its still 450/box...some of the dual shields sell for less than a box if not half of one...it is just crazy how Topps is allowed to get away with releasing garbage like this...lol

You do realize that last year's Five Star has nearly dried up and sells for about $150 over factory cost, right? Last year's Five Star was a hit, while I was picking up last year's NT for less than $300 a box from my distributor a month after it's release. NT rebounded this year due to the success of some of the rookies in it (Tebow), but NT was far from a slam-dunk last year.

That being said, it's too early to write off Five Star entirely but based on the early results, it's not going to take off like last year's did.

Five Star is not a perfect product, but I watched last year as both NT and 5 star released. NT dropped $50 a box within a week, and 5 Star jumped $50 within a week. NT dropped box price like a rock, whereas 5 star rose and never came back down. People can go on and on about resale value, but products like this are designed for high end collectors, not rip and flippers. The fact that 5 Star maintains a high market price for a box is a testament to the fact that it served its target market well...and the fact NT did not maintain its market value vice versa.

That is exactly the point though. Last year's Five star held up real well, mostly because it was new, and it had nice patches and decent QC all in all. That is the problem here. This year they seem to have (perhaps intentionally) dropped the ball on this one, when they could have carried it far afield instead. they could have trounced NT with slightly larger patch windows, real multi color patches, no redemptions (which has been associated with panini more and more of late, and has been an issue with them) and better QC. Instead, they seem to roll back qualityh on all counts. THAT is what is so dissapointing. I'm sure there will be some really nice cards popping up, but they really should have done a better job on what could and should be an iconic product.

I was not referring to boxes/cases, I buy singles, and buy high end mainly at that, and I did not touch Five Star last year nor will I this year. I said last year if I got the urge to waste my money on Five Star I would not pay 200/box, it is not worth it and I stand by it this year as well and I even like this years design, but it is not worth it. Singles can be had for next to nothing in two months other than Newton. Sure the on card autos are nice and I wish NT would incorporate that into their release. Or at least have Game Worn vs Event worn since the release is so late, but with where everything is at now, NT will be the far better product as it was last year IMO...strictly from a high end singles buyer POV mind you...

2010 NT True RC /99 vs 2010 Five Star True RC /50 last I checked NT Bradford with 2clr patch was selling for 500+, a five star 3clr /50 was bringing right around 225

IMO, I could care less how well the boxes hold their value. 5* may have maintained a high box price but the single prices fell faster than a dumb chic at a bar on $1 u-call-it night. NT holds it's single sales value much better and the patches are always amazing. I like Topps for the most part but this release is a joke and is not worth nearly what they charge. Why would you put 5x better patches in a product (Inception) that costs
5x less than 5 Star?
