Upper Deck announces QB rookie redemption in 2012 Football
April 26, 2012 at 12:27 PM By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor With Upper Deck releasing its flagship football set before the NFL Draft, collectors might be worried about not getting cards of the hottest draft picks. But the company has found a way to fix that problem by including “Trade Upper Deck” cards in 2012 Upper Deck Football. The cards come in two versions: gold and silver. Each will be good for a first-round rookie quarterback card. The gold is for an autograph version and the silver is for an unsigned card. An Upper Deck official said the cards are tough to pull, but didn’t give exact odds on the run. Upper Deck has done this in the past. Most notable was for the 1992-93 basketball season when a “NBA Draft” card was included in their basketball set, which was redeemable for a Shaquille O’Neal card. At the time, Classic owned the rights to create Shaq cards exclusively during his first year. Companies had to find ways to get collectors Shaq in their product once the Classic deal ran out. The Upper Deck card didn’t say exactly who the card was for, but it was redeemable for the overall number one pick from the 1992 draft. So, who do you think will be this year’s version of the rookie redemption? Or perhaps it could be several quarterbacks slated to go in the first round? How so? This has been a pretty common practice in the industry for years. Redemptions for people drafted at certain picks, redemptions for the 1st player picked at a certain position, redemptions for a "mystery" rookie autograph, etc. Were all of those shady as well?

I remember the first time they did this with Shaq in 1992. I pulled that card and was so excited. Now the trade card is worth way more. If I pull the Silver one I'd keep it.

I'm excited, if it's Luck (which it probably is), it's a great way to add value to the product.
Look at it this way would you rather have no opportunity at Luck at all in the product or at least have this kind of shot, which is really the only one UD can provide currently.

It is almost certainly Luck. No other player right now would be worth that type of redemption. While it does suck that you will have to redeem it, at least you have a chance to pull one. That bad boy will be pretty rare, per the press release.

UD does a lot of underhanded things... but I don't see this as one of them.

This is bascially an extra hit anyways isnt it? If I can recall, the people that have pulled it already had 3 other autos. I mean it has to be luck but its a 1st round pick regardless which should only be 3 maybe 4 players if Weeden goes at the end of the round.

I took this to mean that it would be multiple people, not just the #1 overall, and as such, not just Luck. Sounds like a crap shoot. |

I would be shocked if UD (at least sports division) is open and operational NEXT June 2013. Way too many courts cases, players owed, and even worse rumors floating around.
Redemption card will not start shipping until JUNE 1, 2013! WOW!

I mean it's for a first-round quarterback, so that means it can only be Luck, Griffin, or Tannehill, and possibly Weeden/Osweiler. (who should be the only quarterbacks taken in the first-round).

I think it's Luck, can't read too much into the specifics. After all they have to be vague, with no current deal they can't just bluntly say, "WE WILL SIGN LUCK LATER AND THIS IS FOR A LUCK CARD WHEN WE DO!" That would get them in hot water, Luck already sued one card company!
