Question about BGS grading 'authentic'

I obtained a card in a trade. It is a Chris Johnson Contenders rookie auto. It is slabbed by BGS and the auto is graded a 10. But instead of a card grade, it says 'Authentic'. I never thought anything of it but has been told that it happens because the card is damaged. I looked over the card myself, the best I could and the card doesn't appear to have any noticeable damage.

So why do cards get labeled like this and how does that affect the value of the card?

I am not sure but I think that it is slabbed authentic if you chose that for if it does not meet a minimum grade....if this is true it is possible he had it at a min. 9.5....not positive at all.

You tell the grader (IE BGS in this case) "if it doesn't get X grade, just slab it authetntic"... PSA does this as well. Hope that helps

So no matter what, it's trimmed? That is the only option?

No, BUT I'd say its very likely. To put a percentage on it (obviously just my opinion, number means nothing), I'd say 65% or more are altered. I think some of them even say authentic and then altered on the bottom. Not all of them though.

Mine doesn't say altered on it.

Just not sure why you would use percentages when you acknowledge you made them up, lol.

Well I do a lot of grading and have seen the scenario plenty of times. Good luck.

Yes, he's the head grader for the BGS Hollywood office. He also doesn't like strippers.

Completely false. They do not grade authentic on trimmed cards, they grade it altered. Same color label as authentic, blue, but it stated altered, not authentic. My guess is the person who subbed it requested a minimum grade and if it didn't meet it then slab it authentic.

I saw one recently that said authentic and altered, I'll try to find a pic of it

the word altered stands out significantly so if RJ
Would notice if the card had that labeled slab.

The card is so far off center (up and down), most likely didn't meet a minimum grade.

I would crack it because most folks know why it's just slabbed authentic. 10 auto doesn't do anything for CJ.

I would prefer a graded card, even 7.5 or 8.5 over the authentic. When I see 'authentic' it triggers me to think something was altered and the submitter had it slabbed to help in passing it off.

I highly doubt someone would trim a contenders auto rc, but that is just my opinion. I bet someone sent it in for grading and put Minimum BGS 9.5 or Authentic Slab and this is the result. You may be better off cracking that thing out if the authentic slab raises any questions. It doesn't show as altered so it isn't tampered with imo.

The only cards I would ask to be slabbed Authentic are printing plates, since they grade so low on Surface. Then again, I don't get any of my cards graded, so it's a moo point.
