Default Always looking for good advice about collecting

Hi all, I've been enjoying reading the hobby talk forum lately, and I've gleaned some good insight on different aspects of card collecting.

It got me to thinking about just straight up asking everybody what some of the best tips and pointers are that they've discovered or learned.

I'm envious of many of the big spenders on here. Their collections are fantastic.

I would love to have a collection worthy of that status some day. I'm in no hurry, and I figure I'll be in collecting/buying/trading mode for the next 25 years before I will consider selling my collection.

I'm trying to use a little foresight and stretch my budget as best I can. I have about a $30 a week average budget for cards. I've been trying to narrow down my interests as well so that I only target my favorite players and players I consider to have good value and/or potential. I don't expect to have a valuable collection by the time I retire, but some bets look better than others.

Anywho, I was wondering what things you guys do to get better at collecting. Really, anything from stuff like buying bubble-mailers in bulk, to helpful e-bay tips, what standards you use to decide when buying cards, why you do or don't collect graded cards, etc.

My freebie tip: Ebay is your friend (especially in the off season). Good luck collecting!

Thanks! Yeah, I already love targeting cards in the off season. I mainly collect singles now, so I wait until a lot of the year's product is out for sale. I never break good boxes, so spending the $100+ on a box now goes towards a handful of singles I actually want instead. I still get the occasional itch to break a box though! It's like lottery tickets, except you still have something to show for it if you miss.

Gotcha. Figured I'd ask. I'm a ways away. Monticello (Indiana Beach)

Isn't there a pretty good card shop up that way? I recall people pulling some killer stuff from the Fort Wayne area.

Indiana Beach is fun. I suppose you've been there 437 times?

The only shops left here are the Sports Spot and AZ Coins in Glenbrook. The SS is okay. I go there once a year or so. Supplies, mostly. AZ is too expensive and limited. There's an okay card show here every month though.

Most of my buying is online anymore.

Not really. Was bought out by a bigger company so that hometown feel is gone. Taco Shoppe is still there though, so that's a plus. Our kids like kiddy land so that's all that matters.

Side note, we buy all our Ford parts from Southworth Ford in Marion

Lol good ole Southworth. Marion is a sh!t hole now, practically a ghost town since the big factories left or got rid of most of their workers. RCA closed, General Tire closed & General Motors if still operating is slim to none at the Metal Stamping plant.

BTW IB had some killer tacos lol

Small world. I deliver booze and use to run a route in Monticello. Delivered to Indiana Beach many times.

Heard the Madaam Carol was either being sold or closed. Can't remember which.

Loved the food from a place I think was called oakville inn or something like that. Delicious.

Maybe it was oakdale inn. It's been a while.
