I got this message today when doing a search:
"Search using the wildcard symbol (*) is no longer supported." WHAT THE F****************K?!?!?!?!??!?! Why the hell isn't it supported anymore? So now we have to search for "autograph" to get autograph listings? .....great (Note: if this doesn't seem like a big deal, wait till you miss out on a great card, or your card goes for wayyyy less money because people can't find it--and then you'll feel my anger/pain) |

How is not allowing us to search for MORE listings a way to IMPROVE the search experience?
If people don't want to use the wildcard symbol--THEN DON'T. The wildcard symbol is a BASIC AND FUNDAMENTAL TOOL in the search-engine process, one meant to HELP BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS!!!! This is going to lead me to BUY LESS since I won't be able to find the items that I want, it is going to lead to me SELLING LESS because people won't be able to find my items--and IS EVENTUALLY GOING TO LEAD ME TO LEAVE EBAY ALTOGETHER!!!! |

I agree with everything said so far in this thread! This sounds like Adobe or Microsoft - "Let's remove functionality, and call it a feature!"

Now you have to write in "autograph"--which kills the character limit and prevents you from putting in other pertinent information which would allow people to search for your listing. |

Have to admit I've never used this feature. I do however use the - to remove words I don't want i.e -break -box -group when im trying to search for new releases and dont want to have to sift through 10,000 box break listings.

The * was essential for any buyer using the search to find poorly titled auctions, such as those with misspellings in them. Removing the * is going to make life difficult for all those "deal" seekers.
For those buyers that just want to find what they really want, and aren't worried so much about finding auctions with poor titles, then removing the * isn't really going to hurt you that much. Like has been said above, you can search for (au,auto, autograph, autographed) and find 99% of the auto's you'll be looking for. I have no idea why eBay would remove the * from the searches, that is weird. If they think it'll make poorly titled auctions end higher (so they make more money in fees) they are wrong. The auctions will actually end lower because there will be less people finding those auctions by using the * in a search. |

I tried that based on the verbage in the e-mail that they were searching for similar text. Compared to the bracket version above I was getting ~5% less results, but didn't go through in detail to see what it was missing. The bracket version was getting about 2% less than the au* version, whilst that still worked, which were mainly misspellings I guess.

change is scary....
Wildcard searches hit the database servers hard. I'm sure this factor went into eBay's decision to make the change. Life goes on.

they also seem to have taken away the check box under the search button for "title and description"...but, you can still get there if you click on advanced search...but...why take the check box away??? it was much easier

Ugh.... first they made 'started between' disappear which was awesome for finding newly listed items... now this trash. believe me, I knew about it almost instantly. I run searches for tons of older autograph cards from the early 2000's. Now, I guess I'll just miss out on the poorly titled ones, etc. that the * search was good for.

I run the following search while I'm "indisposed" at work: "drew bledsoe". It returns > 5000 on average, but I've had too much luck finding poorly listed auctions for cards I REALLY dig.

It sounds like to me they have some lazy programmers that don't want to properly plug SQL Injection attacks. Most of what I have heard from the techs is that what they removed could have been used to do attacks but could have easily been prevented without having to rip out functionality.
