I'm not a fan off Playoff-Donruss-Leaf stuff as it all looks the same to me, but I did enjoy Absolute. As far as rookie cards, which product has the most potential long term? I do like all the patch and material cards in Absolute, but it doesn't look like they hold their value. Are the simple Contenders auto cards the best product long term?

I'd definately have to say Contenders is the best long term value holder for Panini/Donruss/Leaf...all those products. Sometimes even better than National Treasures in my opinion, but only because NT has further to flux as it has a higher overall value.
I'd basically consider Contenders to be Panini's version of SP Authentic...just without the patches. Those two are staples of release every year...and always tend to hold a high value. Just my two cents.

Here's my two cents. The only reason NT is valued higher is because it costs more. I mean, you've got to spend like $200+- for a box so you're guaranteed something nice. As for Contenders, $5-$6 pack, 4-5 hits per box and way better resale for what you put in.
