Default Tony Gonzalez Collection

Hello all,

Figured since I have posted 10x today what I have my whole time being here, I would show some cards from my Tony Gonzalez collection.

Only bad thing is my scanner broke a couple months ago so all my 2012 scans are eBay sellers. Will likely pick one up this next week though and replace the images with nicer ones.

I have to admit I am both sad and a little relieved Gonzalez is retiring....only one more season game. I imagine I will pick up another pc in a year or two but who knows. Gonzo, Steve Young, Heisman, and several master sets is more then enough (not counting non sport related collection).

So first, I guess I will say, thank you Tony Gonzalez for giving it 110% every Sunday for an amazing 16 years.

I suppose it is only logical to start with Gonzo's first card.

Produced by PowerBars ("Athletic Energy Food") and released in 1994/95, Gonzo's first card is a basketball card that notes him a freshman (although he was a junior at the time). The set also has two team cards with Gonzalez and perhaps the first card of coach Billy Kennedy, then an assistant coach.

1994/95 Powerade California Bears Set

1994/95 Powerade California (Basketball) #NNO Tony Gonzalez

1996/97 Chicago High Patrol California Bears Set (with Tony Gonzalez)

1996/97 Chicago High Patrol California Bears (Basketball) #2 Tony Gonzalez

Need the 1995 Cal Bears Football Set to complete his college run.

Every Mark day I will post a few more. Mark days are like normal days, except something they last several days, and occasionally a month or two....

Clear Skies,
Mark

A slight sidetrack but this is just cool, whenever Gonzalez scores a TD, he dunks the football over the goal, did this KC as well. A couple weeks ago, a ref apparently didn't know this.

Since I only have a small portion scanned I guess I will just jump around and post on them for a few days.

2000 Topps Season Opener #191 Tony Gonzalez

2000 Topps Season Opener #191 Tony Gonzalez Topps Vault photo proof and original Topps file envelope. Beside airbrushing the background, they removed the glare from the Wilson logo on the football and lightened up his face some.

Note how they lightened his skin....something Topps did quite often, as my postings will likely evidently show.

I am at 103 now....with two more on the way, and I lost one here in the house I got last month I am not counting. Maybe I can hit 125 this year.

Okay....a few more scans.

My earliest 1/1...a printing plate but the first time they were inserted into packs. (Why beckett list things like 1997 Stadium Club printing plates is beyond me).

And I guess a cooler 1/1...

Nice...and hey, I live in Wichita. Never met TG, and he always looked like a dot from the corner seats at arrowhead.....I am cold just thinking of that.

Added: Giving that a little more thought, I wonder why he never came to the Chiefs-Wichita Fire Department Basketball charity games? Gonzo has a great charitable history, spent a lot of time at KC's McDonald House (next door to one of the national leading children hospitals) and even saved a lady choking once, among other things, so I am not being critical of him there. Just with his basketball history...he would have been natural...and I would have met him several times as that is one the charities I donate to (Wichita Firemen).

Seems like the Wichita Fire Department usually won, as the chiefs always played half or more lineman along with Will Shields. Not your best basketball players due to size alone.

Okay, guess I am bored today....more Gonzo scans.

Perhaps my favorite small set, if I can call it that....2009 Topps Unique.

2009 Topps Unique #11 Tony Gonzalez Platinum 1/1

2009 Topps Unique #11 Tony Gonzalez Gold 25/25 (I have 5-6 of these and of course the higher print runs...which I have not scanned yet)

Still looking for the "O"....although I did pick this 1/1 up....

Other inserts from the set....

Also check out this sketch card from 2010 Topps Football....he used the 2009 Topps Unique base card.

Hobrecht has a website which shows many of his fine pieces of artwork, WELCOME TO HOBRECHT SPORTS ART!. He did several other Sketch Cards for 2010 Topps in both baseball and football and was a featured artist in 2010 Topps National Chicle Baseball. His original work goes in the $7000-10000 range with prints in the $400-800 range.

Well.....if you decide to go to other KC games hit me up.....got season tix starting this year (what a great year to get them) and we are in sec 123 row 22. Nice to hear that there is another member here from Wichita....what shop do you go to?

I agree with the WFD scrimmage......my uncle is a battalion chief so he has told me about the games before, I have never been but would love to go. Neil Smith was here a while ago (was suppose to be with Dexter - but he didnt show) and signed at a silent auction in Derby. Again.....nice TG's.......would love to have half the cards you have!

One of the most under-appreciated players in NFL history. Nice collection!

When Neil Smith came down (I think he might have two years), I had him sign a helmet...actually a Chiefs fireman helmet (it was cheap), I dragged to all the free signings for 5-6 years, and at some point sold it fairly high because of Derrick Thomas (that's a long and maybe better story). I already had the other players there on the helmet and they get like an hour for signing....which is mostly for the kids, but needing only one sig, I kinda of stepped to the side and watched for about 30 mins. before i moved closer to get the helmet signed.

Smith's marker went out and as he was like 10 ft. from me, I reached over and handed him mine, he signs for another 20 mins. or so, and I move closer to the table, as the time is closing down.

So almost at the very end, he says, "Didn't I sign for you already." I said something like, "If you signed the helmet, I wouldn't need you to sign it,' very calmly of course. He pauses, signed my helmet, and hands back the sharpie before standing up. I am sure he thought he did and it is mostly a kid event so I am not knocking him.....you just reminded me of it. I think its kinda funny now, Smith is a good guy.

Coming 400 miles here and back, playing a charity game, signing for free, only to lose to slightly older and less colored guys, all to raise a few dollars for our firemen says it all.

"Well.....if you decide to go to other KC games hit me up.....got season tix starting this year (what a great year to get them) and we are in sec 123 row 22. Nice to hear that there is another member here from Wichita....what shop do you go to?"

Pretty good tickets, much better then the corner (cheap) seats I have always got. I haven't been to a game in 3-4 years and really enjoy going, so maybe we will have to do something. Arrowhead has the best atmosphere.

"Again.....nice TG's.......would love to have half the cards you have!"

Thanks for the comment, although I haven't really posted many of them yet...this will take a while...lol. An advantage of collecting one of the lower end price wise cool players.

Very nice collection and I appreciate that you took time to share those awesome, unique TG cards. Big TG fan myself.

I was coming in and he was going out of the PF Changs in the plaza in 2001 or 2002 when I saw him in person. I told him, "Good luck tomorrow". He said, "thanks man". They were playing the Broncos that Sunday. Man, he is huge in person.
