Default Calling out the Topps design team

After looking at some of the box breaks of Bowman Sterling, one thing seems to stand out:

Every Topps Product looks the same!

Topps Flagship & Topps Chrome are exactly the same

Finest, Platinum, and Sterling all look the same but with different colors

Is this normal?

Every company recycles their product designs.

They do not care what we believe.

They MIGHT change if the rubes didn't continue to bust so much wax in search of their MOJO pulls.

and somehow there is a market for all of them!

For the end consumer, I feel like if you have bowman sterling /25 andrew luck patch auto, that should automatically reduce finest /25 andrew luck patch auto 50% if they look exactly the same. sucks for all the guys who just paid $1k for their luck finest auto

For topps, from a branding perspective. where is the difference between bowman and topps, let alone topps and topps products? Why would anyone want/need to differentiate?

*cough* PANINI *cough*

I believe the only company who doesn't beat a design to death throughout the year is Upper Deck and that is only because they are barely above water (and release a lot fewer products).

The problem is having to release so many products in a given year. It has become a cluster #@#@#@#@ of epic proportions.

But why do they need to release so many products?

They are given an expectation by NFL properties on how many licensed releases need to be done a year. They dont necessarily have to fufill them all, but in order to pay for licensing costs, its not a good idea to come in short. That is why Panini is going to release 18 products and Topps like 16 or whatever.

Also, Topps and Topps Chrome have been the exactly the same since what, the beginning? Its a little late to call them out for that.

As for the similar designs, I am definitely on board with that one, at least the basic design isnt horrible. Its simple and gives focus to the right part of the design. That being said, its too bad they are all so similar. However, I would MUUUUUUUCH rather have the designs from Topps, than the disgusting design work that Panini has called its "product calendar" for 2012 - Momentum anyone? Prominence? No?

That's pretty spot on I think, however Panini has much cooler hits...in Tony Gonzalez at least.

I am always amazed how card collectors just complain at everything. New product and new design...it's trash, you should have bought singles. Classic product that sells very well every year...it's trash, you should have bought singles. Low end product...it's trash, no enough hits. High end product, it's trash, too high, don't like the design, or whatever.

I really have to wonder why most of you collect.

i buy mainly singles and i personally prefer panini to topps with the exception of chrome. not enough cowboys hits in topps to justify buying boxes. atleast panini has a little bit more

There aren't superfractors in Panini, though...

I really like how Topps does Series 1, 2 & Update in Baseball. Has always been the same all year round. However, with Chrome & Archives & stuff it gets a little exaggerated. In football its less so, but I'm getting a little frustrated with the cookie cutter jersey/auto/insert combination. Insert leaves people wishing there was a jersey and an auto in their cards, Jersey leaves people wishing there was an auto. etc. Its just pure lazy design and I've seen it over and over again the past year.

Makes me really happy though that my man Egnew is in many different products this year. Love collecting all the new Egnews and even though he isn't a big name Topps & Panini really have given him a moment in the light.
