Well, damn. Since ESPN said so, they must be right!

ESPN is the TMZ of the Sports world, everything they say is to get a reaction.

ESPN just said RG3 won't win it because they're questioning his blackness

It is not a fake award. It is a real award it just isn't the "official" AP one.

Why are people saying Russell over RG3?? What is this based on. Remember these awards are based SOLELY on the regular season.

RG3
Passing Yards 3200
Rushing Yards 815
Total TDs: 27
INTs: 5

Russell Wilson
Passing Yards 3118
Rushing Yards 489
Total TDs: 30
INTs: 10

If you are going to count total TDs, you should also account for total fumbles.

The last 2 rookies to win the PFWA ROY award, (2010 Sam Bradford) & (2011 Cam Newton), also went on to win the AP ROY award. I know it's not a lock, but I think RG3 wins the AP award as well.

Gotta look beyond the stats.

Griffin - position was handed to him, taken 2nd overall. Expectation was to be great - and he was. Didnt have to earn a starting spot. Griffin couldnt stay healthy and missed at least 1.5 games.

Wilson - position was earned, taken 75th overall. Expectaion was nill, he clearly far surpassed any possible expectations anyone had including the Seahawks. He had to win the position quick over Matt Flynn who Seattle went after and gave a pretty decent contract to, to be their starter. Wilson started and stayed healthy every game.

Skins had 24th hardest strength of schedule. Hawks had 11th. Makes Wilson's season even more impressive when you look at entire picture and not just 4 stats.

Let's see... I have

1 RGIII auto

0 Luck autos

0 Wilson autos

RGIII should be the clear cut winner of the AP ROY. It should not even be close..... Totally joking here for those that have a hard time identifying humor.

One can certainly make a case for any of the three. All of them had remarkable rookie seasons. As did Alfred Morris.

Totally agreed. I think Wilson was the most impressive rookie of the year on and off the field.

Then it should go to Alfred Morris no? He was pick #173 overall, had several running backs on the roster that he had beat out.

It should not be Luck for the simple reason that you can't isolate him as the reason for the turnaround - the entire roster was revamped, new coaches, and several rookies contributed. With his subpar completion percentage and TD to INT ratio, you could make the argument that inserting an RGIII or Wilson may have produced even greater success.

The only blemish against RGIII is that another rookie stepped into his role in a big game and delivered even better passing stats. However, his lack of turnovers, high completion %, impressive TD:INT ratio and dual-threat ability put him above Luck. Washington was also considered a "basement" team, especially after the injuries to Orakpo and Carriker - the defense was horrid (in the first half of the season) and the offense had to put up 30+ points a game without Garcon & Davis for much of it.

Wilson should be ROTY. For the most part, the personnel stayed the same and he showed that he was a significant upgrade over Jackson. He put up superior statistics and only improved as the season went on.

Question for you guys - given that the award is presented in early February, does playoff performance factor into voting. If so, I can't see Wilson not winning.

Fair point, although you isolated those points from my overall argument.

But no, I dont think he should. And I say this with nothing but love for Morris & Griffin... Look at it like this - what would give WAS greater success this season?: RG3 & Royster/Committee or Cousins/Grossman & Morris?

I believe RG3/Royster/Committee would give them greater success than other option. Hence Griffin more valuable to team. And I believe Wilson more valuable and more impressive than Griffin. Although Morris' ability to take that much punishment was amazing. But Shanahan does that w/RBs time and time again. Its not about the player but the line and scheme. Not nearly as valuable, just did what he was supposed to very well.
