Big project tons of cards

Collected as a kid, then 25 years pass and got a few packs recently and got hooked again after a few good pulls. So now I have this huge mess of cards to organize after going nuts at Walmart and hobby shops. I even have my wife interested and opening packs, it's been fun and have gotten some awesome hits in the last month.
Well my mom caught wind of our recent new hobby, and she dropped off 3 huge bins of boxes of cards that she hung on to for me! So now my mess is doubled! Lol
All of these cards (mostly football) are from '84-'91, topps, fleer, pro-set, action packed, maddens., etc, but I do have boxes that go back into the 70's and I am not sure how I acquired those!
I have no idea on how to start organizing all of these old and new cards.

Beckett used to put out a football only magazine, but now I see it is multisport, and less detailed. (Meaning they only name the big names from each set and don't go back really far in date.

Any tips on organizing would be helpful, I think this is going to be at least a month long process and I just need to figure out where to even start! Thanks in advance for any ideas you can give me
