Default Clowney's Hit Would Now Warrant an Ejection.

I'm an Michigan fan, and I disapprove of this.

Report: Jadeveon Clowney's helmet-popping hit against Michigan would now warrant ejection | MLive.com

Michigan and South Carolina played one of the best football games of last season. ESPN ranked it among the five best of the season.

Jadeveon Clowney was a star even before the Outback Bowl, but his hit of Michigan's Vincent Smith has earned him even greater fame.
Associated Press And yet, those dramatics were overshadowed by a single play.

Make that, a single hit.

Now it appears Jadeveon Clowney's blast of Michigan's Vincent Smith would not only be illegal this season, but would have gotten the defensive end ejected.

ACC officiating supervisor Doug Rhoads "casually mentioned" during ACC media days that he would have flagged Clowney for "targeting," according to Columbia, S.C., radio host Heath Cline. And in 2013, "targeting" draws an automatic ejection.

SBNation followed that up by tracking down noted FoxSports officials guru Mike Pereira, who affirmed he would have tossed Clowney for the hit.

"Each conference has talked to their officials and the philsophy is when in doubt, throw," Pereira told SBNation. "They're trying to change the philosophy, and I'm OK with that to a degree, but it gets dangerous when you start talking about automatic ejections. Very marginal hits are going to lead to ejections that not only affect that game but the following game."

Pereira then watched a replay of Clowney's hit and remarked, according to SBNation:

"There's actually another issue here regarding when the helmet comes off. Because when the helmet comes off, that indicates the end of the play. Does he have possession before the helmet comes off? It would've been a fiasco."
[He sighs and frowns watching replays.]

"Remember what you're dealing with in targeting. It's the crown of the head. Not simply the helmet, but the crown of your head [points to top of his head]. Not the forehead. You're looking for a guy hitting who is looking at the ground."

"Boy ..."

[Still can't make up his mind. Looks at frozen frame.]

"If I'm an official, based on 'when in doubt,' he's out. He's ejected. And when that goes to replay there's no way they overturn it. There's a great potential that hit causes an ejection this year."

The rule change won't help Smith now. The image of helmet flying nearly 10 feet backward, while the ball is simultaneously wrestled away by Clowney, will live on.

And so will Michigan's 33-28 defeat.

But it's clear the new targeting penalties are going to change the way the game is called, and eventually played.

Football will be going down hill real quick over the next 10 years because of all these concussions and other injuries.

RT @EricLeGrand52 There's no way #clowneyhit is illegal. Take it from a guy who broke his neck
Via Sportscenter....

Terrible if that warrants an ejection. I know player safety and all but he wasn't hurt and it was a clean hit. NCAA and NFL are trying to get rid of hard hitting

I know im no ref, but after watching that play, that was one sweet hit. I personally don't see anything wrong with what he did.

I also have to say, the way things are going, the hardest hitting and most fun games of football to be watched will soon be the lingerie league, or Legends now I guess. I understand safety for players, but come on, every football player knows when they put that helmet on, they will get hit, and there are risks, and yet they always put it on.

Roger Goodell and his Heads Up program needs to go, he is the one who is pushing for these crappy rules on the entire world of football.

He just hit him with force. It's what they practice for. It probably has to do with his helmet coming off. Flag on the play excessive force..right!

Wow. You're "targeting" the ball carrier on every single play. Every tackle should warrant ejection now with these crazy rules
