Ebay question Buyer wants to send me money order??

I've been selling on ebay for about three years and for the first time a buyer messages me for my address. At first I thought this was strange...but then he says he wants to pay me using a money order. I politely replied and told him I only accept Paypal as form of payment and I put that in all of my descriptions on my items. Guy has low feedback too. Have I done the right thing? I just think it's weird sending someone a money order for an ebay purchase...

I wonder if we could take pics of the money order the same way as a check and deposit it into your account.
You know for lazy folks such as myself that have never dealt with money order or seen one in person.

Jackg1980 10-16-2013 03:22 PM

i accept them all the time.

bigzig 10-16-2013 03:23 PM

It doesn't happen often, but there are still some buyers who don't use paypal. There is nothing wrong with accepting a money order. You just can't ask for it.

i've taken mo before, how low is his feedback? what was the listing?

I've never had one either. Don't even know what one looks like. Hopefully he can pay via paypal

It was for a card that sold for $2.99...lol he has 20 feedback. That's another reason why I'm not comfortable with it

No you can't do a phone deposit like a check.

Money Orders are the best. Just request they send a USPS Money Order - then cash it at the post office.

Done and done.

jcduncan 10-16-2013 03:31 PM

With shipping this purchase is less than $6...

jcduncan 10-16-2013 03:31 PM

Is there any way he can do a money order through paypal?

I've received them for around the same amount.

Some people don't like giving their private information out on-line, so they don't open up PayPal accounts and only use Money Orders. I've never had an issue, and I save a little on the PayPal fees.

I only accept Postal Service money orders, less headache.

t2554 10-16-2013 03:34 PM

Sure money orders make the transaction go by a little slower, but no paypal fees = win. Haven't had a buyer pay with one in years but I would love for them to do so, especially on high value items.

Okay, that's what I thought.

If you're nervous about generic money orders just ask for a USPS money order.

They will cash that at the PO - don't even have to go through a bank so it can't bounce or anything if it's fake (if that's what worries you) - cash it, pocket your cash, and send the item all at the same time.

Easy.

Asked him if he could do it via USPS. Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

corndog 10-16-2013 04:01 PM

I have accepted hundreds of money orders - mostly before Paypal came onto the scene. I still have some buyers pay with them. Just make sure to cash them before mailing items.

MeteoriteGuy 10-16-2013 04:10 PM

As a general rule, you can pay in cash, mo, credit card, pp, gold, silver, foreign money or stamps (70% face value). Money is money.

Gore21 10-16-2013 04:11 PM

Do it! No taxes :)

boetie84067 10-16-2013 04:13 PM

they are fine, just takes longer on both ends. if you accept the deal just wait to ship until you get the money order.

rojallad 10-16-2013 04:15 PM

I take money orders all of the time. I just wait until the money order clears before I send the card. Saves fees, eliminates PayPal buyer protection too, making it harder for someone to do a frivolous return. If the order was $500 I would be skeptical but for $6 I would take that all day,

iowadoc77 10-16-2013 05:19 PM

Wait for sure until it clears. They can be faked. Smaller transaction, so probably don't have too much to worry about. Make sure you are up front with the guy that he will have to wait a bit to get his cards because of the money order... his fault not yours

jcduncan 10-16-2013 05:19 PM

Well I asked him to do a money order through USPS and he asked what is that...

He might just get his MO's through his bank or at a Grocery Store or something. That isn't necessarily a red flag.

General rule of thumb (as others have pointed out)

USPS MO - Can ship right away because you would be cashing it at the same time (or I'd hope you would be) - so you've got the cash.
MO from anywhere else - Deposit in the bank and wait to clear (just like a check) so shipping will be delayed a few days.

It's really that easy.
