Cowboys fan, so no dog in this fight. The flag should not have been picked up.

Gronk begins to breakdown his stride in his attempt to change direction MAYBE a frame or two after the DB begins to break on the ball. Was he going to get his shoulder in front of the DB and catch the ball? Doubtful, but still possible. At the very least he may have had a chance to get a hand on the ball and who knows where a ball in the air is going to land.

Either way, you don't pick up a flag like that when the target receiver was still in the area of the play. Simple as that.

agreed, there was a reason the flag was thrown and the ref saw. Should not be allowed to pick it up

I don't suppose anyone noticed that right after he threw it, he IMMEDIATELY beckoned the other referees over. When I see a flag thrown, the ref throwing it almost always gives an indicator of the penalty. This guy did not. I think he knew he should not have thrown it.

LMAO what did you have to let go there. The defense giving up the longest run in superbowl history or them letting Hines throw a bomb on them

Maybe the puss tight end dropping a sure TD because he was afraid Joey Porter was around

Still doesn't negate a penalty. You've never seen PI or holding called on play where the ball was picked?

Can't be too sure on that one. It could have very well been an incompletion if Gronk would have dove for that ball and made contact with that defender.

Obviously it was pass interference. If they actually missed it, it would be one thing but they didn't. They threw the flag and then chickened out of the call. If that was in Foxboro they would have not changed their minds. Regardless Pats did not to deserve that game and were probably going to fail on the next play anyways.

Pretty much this.

You get some calls, others you don't. Seems like the Pats record evens out in the end based on those two.

Also, you should have separated PI/holding since there is a LARGE difference in the result.

Personally, I think if they kept the flag, they call holding.

BTW - that was Randle El who threw the bomb to Hines.

you must be watching something different, he saw the flag and was clapping.

Though there have been good arguments on both sides, good thing we have John Brenkus on the case to figure things all out for us:
