plus how can a Packers fan not be happy about essentially trading MD Jennings (and cash) to the Bears for Julius Peppers?

I would have traded MD Jennings for a Julius Peppers base card.

FWIW - Michael C Wrights latest article on ESPN says that coaches believed they were only getting 6-8 full effort snaps from Peppers a game, and that's why they were comfortable releasing him and not interested in trying to bring him back at a reduced price.

Not here to troll, just thought this was interesting.

Man, I am STOKED to hear we got Peppers! At first I was so focused on Ware and Allen that Peppers was a distant third choice. I knew he was available, but at the same time I forgot :/ I think Peppers will benefit from being on the Pack and so will Clay!

Ok so what # will Peppers wear? 90 is taken by Raji, 92 is retired.

Absolutely psyched about this trade, especially with TT's history of bringing in big free agents. Looks like a pretty nice contract (3/$30m, 7.5 guaranteed), too, if it doesn't work out.

The defensive front seven could seriously be DOGS this year.

yeah, didn't really have the personnel for it this past season. With Neal back in the fold and now with Peppers, I would love to see it re-implemented next season.

I hope the Peppers plays better than last year. But how much could that been a lack of play due to not liking being in Chicago? GO PACK GO!!

Maybe he was reading the writing on the wall last year, and knew he couldn't be retained?

However, it sure looked like he trying extra hard on that Rodgers - to - Cobb TD pass on 12/29.

Kind of excited after reading some of this:
Julius Peppers joins Packers; predicts 'something different'

Quote:
“I’m going to let Coach McCarthy deal with questions about the position and the scheme. I’m not really sure. We haven’t talked in detail about what the plan is going to be for me, but I can say it’s going to be something different,” Peppers told packers.com on Saturday.
Quote:
“The teams that have the good quarterbacks are the teams that win. That obviously factored into some of my decision making,” Peppers said of joining Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. “I’m looking forward to playing with Aaron. As much as I disliked chasing him around, I’m excited to join him.”

Win a championship with the Packers?

“That’s the most important thing. I haven’t won a championship. That’s where my focus is. I feel like the team is set up to make a run and I feel I can help get it there,” Peppers said.

At 34, Peppers is coming off a season he said “was not up to my personal standards.” In 2013, Peppers recorded 7½ sacks. He was released by the Bears on March 11.

“I have a lot left in the tank. I have a lot left to give, a lot left to offer. I want to show people I can still play the game at a high level,” he said.

“Expectations are not for me; stats don’t necessarily have a lot of value in my book. You can have a great season without having great stats. My goal is to play football at a high level. I’m a pass rusher, so that’s going to be a big part of what I can do. Play hard and have an impact in every game,” Peppers added.

Love this move! Its eerily similar to the Woodson signing a couple of years ago, a player that had a down year but is highly motivated to win a championship at their stage of there career. Great contract too, its only about $7 million guaranteed so essentially its a 1 year deal if he dosent perform to the Packers standards. Highly unexpected, at least to me, but I think its a great signing, you can never have too many good pass rushers.

I just saw an interesting statistic that Peppers has had less than 7 sacks once in his 12 year career, and has 29 his last 3 years. Its not like he some washed up players on his last leg, he still has some left in the tank.

Now I just want a decent safety FA signing (Clemens from MIA) and possibly resign Jolly and on to the draft for the Packers.

You would have to think the Bears would have made a harder push to keep him if they had an idea the Packers might sign him, probably thought the money wasnt going to be right for GB. I mean its not like the Bears have a stacked DL as it is and the contract Peppers got in GB isnt that much in all reality.

Another thing that Peppers does is he blocks FG's which I know Mason Crosby brought up on twitter that hes glad he wont have to worry about him blocking anymore of his kicks in the future. I really like this move, its a classic Ted Thompson type of signing.

not really similar, Woodson was in the league for 7 years and entering his prime while Peppers is wayy over his prime and isnt close to his old form.

If you look at Woodson stats he only had 1 INT the last 2 years with the Raiders before joining the Packers. He was considered by a lot of people to be on the downside of the career otherwise the Packers and the Bucs(who wanted to switch him to safety) wouldnt have been the only 2 teams to offer him a contract. He wasnt considered at the time just entering his prime, no one knew how much he had left in the tank.

Reggie White would also be a good comparison, he was 32 when he signed with the Packers. 6 years later in his last season with the team, he racked up 16 sacks.

Does anyone read the Ask Vic column on Packers.com? Just found this one from the 13th of March. Pretty funny if you read the header and quote below...

Peppers and Allen started laughing and then hung up

Quote:
Jason from Green Bay, WI

I know Ted doesn’t want to overpay players, but is there not someone we can bring in? Veteran guys? I am sure guys like Peppers and Allen would take less money to play in Green Bay.

I called Julius and Jared and asked them if they’d take less money to play in Green Bay. They started laughing and then hung up. Jared said something about going out back and picking a veteran pass rusher off the veteran pass rusher tree. Jason, you sound desperate. It’s March, Jason.
Haha... oops.

Woodson was in the league for 8 years at that point and nobody else besides Tampa was even rumored to have talked with him that offseason. If he was "entering his prime" by the opinions of the other nfl execs at that time he would have been signed immediately, to a huge contract, on the first day of free agency.

its funny because the same people who bash Jennings and say "good luck in chicago, he was horrible" are the same ones talking like Peppers is the next Reggie white. Guys, reggie white was a FREAK.. he never declined as a player.. ever.

Peppers even in his prime took plays.. and entire games off. He decides when he wants to show up. Look at that last play against the Packers last year. he just bull dozed through and was almost on Rodges as he threw the ball. why did he not do that until the last play of the game?

If, he decides to actually play for you guys. that's awesome for you. Seriously. But the guy talks about how horrible the 3-4 is and how he does not want to play in a 3-4.. and then says all the right things when he is paid. Its lip service.

BTW, im sure he will burn the Bears the same way Cedric Benson only wanted to come to play when he played against us.. That kind of sucks.

Ok, first of all the way Jennings left GB and went to MIN is TOTALLY different then the way Peppers left CHI and went to GB. Peppers didnt cry and whine his way out and decline a fair offer from his former team and take a higher offer from a rival team. From what I know he didn't even receive an offer from CHI and left on good terms.

Second of all, he wanted to play for a 3-4 team when he left CAR and took CHI's offer because they offered them the most and hadn't received his big payday up until that point. I dont know where you heard that Peppers didnt want to play in a 3-4. How can you tell what his lip service and his actual feelings?

You are pretty off base on this whole post

... MD Jennings.. Kinda thought that would be obvious.

And what you said about Peppers is true.. And so is what I said.. That is how I know it's just lip service.

It looks like the relationship between the Bears and Peppers got a little "salty" . *queue Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who*

I'll admit defeat on the whole 3-4 thing. I know for a fact that I read that he did not want to play in a 3-4 when he was asked about it before we signed him but i cant find it. All i can find now is how excited he is to play in one.. You can chose to beleive me or not.. But Like i said. I think his best years are past him..

I guess we will just have to wait for the season to find out.

Because Jennings is AWFUL. There is no mix up here. When you don't offer one of your RFA a tender, you know they are expendable.

Jennings was about as expendable a player as the Packers had. I was SHOCKED that he got signed by anybody even if he is just a camp body.

Our frustration at safety started with Jarron McMillian and continued with M.D. Jennings. Think of it this way... McMillian was the starter going into the season and GOT CUT... it was that bad. M.D. Jennings was BACKING UP a guy who GOT CUT half way into the season.

Even if Peppers duplicated his "bad year" this past season in Chicago, he still has the second most sacks on the Packers. He isn't Reggie White, but he is imposing and with Matthews playing opposite, you won't be able to double them both. I would take Peppers last season and be pretty darn happy.
