Default Texans Talk: Draft, QB Situation

These are just my quick takes on a couple of issues the Texans are facing this off season.

1. Matt Schaub: The obvious decision here is to cut him. While i agree with many that this past year was a fluke and he is still a serviceable QB, his time in Houston will end after years of underachieving. Success is measured in wins and with only 1 playoff win during his tenure plus all the cap space he will eat up this upcoming year, his time as a Texan is all but over.

2. Case Keenum or Draft a QB at #1?: Sure Keenum went 0-8 as a starter, but it was not exactly the perfect time to come under center for Houston. Arian Foster missed most of the season, the offensive line was suspect, stagnant play calling... the list goes on. However Keenum showed some promise; in his best games vs Kansas City & Indy he showed the ability to open up the passing game, above avg. mobility, and good instincts. His shortcomings (reading defenses and accuracy) can be coached and who better to do it than Bill O'Brien. I would not look to much into the wins (lets not forget Troy Aikman went 0-11 his first year as a starter) as the team was just going through the motions towards the latter half of the season. I am all for giving Keenum a fresh start in Houston with a healthy team, a new offense, and a QB guru for a coach. This goes without saying but im not sold on any of the QB's at number 1. However drafting a QB or 2 on the second day of the draft is necessary, just in case.

3. Who to take #1 overall: Bortles, Bridewater, Manziel or Clowney? Nope give me Sammy Watkins. His film is jaw dropping and he is by far the most talented skill player in the draft. Giving what i just said about Keenum, a QB #1 overall is not the way to go. Drafting Clowney i feel would be Mario Williams II (he might have developed into a good player but with no playoff berths to show for it). Take Watkins, who can come in and produce immediately and provide weapons galore for Keenum or a QB we take late (Zach Mettenberger anyone?). Watkins, Hopkins, Johnson, Foster, Graham, and Griffin plus Devier Posey and Lestar Jean providing depth would transform Houston's offense. Three talented 1st round WR's would strike fear into the hearts of of our opponents.

These are just a couple of opinions i wanted to share and i would love feedback from fellow fans thanks for reading! I apologize for any grammatical errors, I wrote this in a bit of a hurry

Love Watkins. He has great talent. But more importantly, he's a class act. If Hopkins can learn a thing or two from him, the texans will be dangerous.

I'd honestly think he should learn from Andre Johnson, but that's just me.

Better be trading down if you want Watkins

109 rec. 1,407 yards avg 12.9 5 TD not too bad for a meh season

I feel like he goes at #2 so trading down wouldn't help much. I feel like regardless of draft position if a player is as talented as Watkins, you can stretch it a bit

not a bad idea either, the line was very sketchy last season. Just don't see the Texans front office doing it in the first round

Who is trading up to get him at 2? You aren't taking Watkins after taking Austin

The rams need an outside reciever. Austin, Bailey, etc. are all slot/#2 guys to me. I wouldn't put it past St. Louis to finally give Bradford a true #1 reciever. That's just me though

Why not? Watkins is a number 1 receiver, Austin is not, at least not yet.

I say draft down to 6-8 and get Barr and upgrade your 2nd pick to another 1st round pick.

im a big proponent of Zach Mettenberger. Take away the ACL injury and i believe he would have been in the convo as a top QB. could be a steal in the mid rounds. I don't necessarily think houston needs a QB at #1 overall.

A monster D will help the offense. Not only will they score defensive but they will get better field position. Russel Wilson could of thrown 0 yards and still would of won the Super Bowl. Also Carr may be available in the second round but I still say go defense 2nd round.

I like carr as well in the second. I would just hope that some team desperate for a QB doesn't try to reach and take him in the 1st (i.e. Christian Ponder and Minnesota)

The potential is sky high. It seems like a no brainer when you think about it.
