Exclamation Upper Deck Responds to Beckett 2007 Exquisite Football Box Buster Episode

Upper Deck was very concerned about the reaction of the collecting community to the contents pulled from two boxes of 2007 Exquisite Football during a recent Beckett Box Busters episode.

Upper Deck, like all manufacturers, makes a practice of sending product samples to hobby publications as a way to help preview products and promote new brands with collectors. Upper Deck DOES NOT make a practice of sending "special" boxes and packs to these hobby partners. As anyone can see from reviewing the history of Upper Deck product in Beckett Box Buster episodes, this recent episode was an anomaly.

The cards pulled in the Beckett Box Buster episode occurred because of collation inconsistencies that could have happened in any hobby shop in any part of the world. Upper Deck understands and appreciates collector concerns on this situation and we are announcing a program to deliver these cards back to collectors.

We are offering the cards in the second pack to collectors who have purchased Exquisite Football. Collectors who purchased the product can send the empty box or a receipt from the purchase to the address below. A random drawing from these entries will be held to determine the winners. An additional two sealed packs of 2007 Exquisite Football will be offered to entries in this program.
The Upper Deck Company
NFL Exquisite Box Buster Promotion
5909 Sea Otter Place
Carlsbad, CA 92010

Collectors should include all of their contact information including address, phone number and e-mail address. For each pack purchased, collectors will receive one entry into the wrapper redemption promotion. Proof of purchase must be received by Friday, May 30, 2008. Winners will be contacted directly by Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

In the coming days, Beckett will be announcing how it is giving away the contents of pack No. 1, including the Adrian Peterson 1/1, and an additional sealed box of Exquisite, through an online contest at beckett.com.

It's good to know that they admit that a great Upper Deck box is an "anomoly".

The odds of winning anything with this "promotion" are about as low as hitting anything decent in a UD product these days. Even if I had empty boxes I wouldn't bother with it.

I like how nowhere in the statement do they specifically deny that they purposely sent Beckett the loaded boxes:

"Upper Deck DOES NOT make a practice of sending "special" boxes and packs to these hobby partners." - just because it's not a practice doesn't mean it didn't happen this time or at other times in the past.

"... because of collation inconsistencies that could have happened in any hobby shop in any part of the world." - sure it could have happened - anything could have happened - they could have sent a loaded box to my local hobby shop, but they didn't; they sent it to Beckett.

Gotta love lawyer-speak that makes it look like you are saying something without actually saying it.

They got caught defrauding their customers, if they admit to that... they could easily be sued. You will never see them admit or apologize to this.

You are right never confirm or deny any wrongdoing. I work for a very large finanical services company and we do it all the time. Settle with SEC, NASD, or a client for a large sum of money without admitting to any wrong doing. In this case UD should be offering some sort of compensation to all collectors who purchased a box or case of the 2007 Exquisite product.

How many people kept their receipts after buying cards? Not too many is my guess. The people who bought early on are screwed.

Yeah, tell me about it. I usually have to hide the evidence so the GF doesn't find out how much I spend on cards!

What a ball wash this whole deal is. UD once again screwed the customer and tried to self promote by sending an intentionally loaded box to another business who is in bed with them. Shame not only on UD, but on Beckett as well. They are what's wrong with collecting.
