I will be heading out there in about a month. Owning a shop I am always interested in seeing how other shops have stuff displayed and just talking the hobby with owners/collectors.

Are there any in the general area I should go to and any I should just stay away from?

All Star Cards is great. Friendly with great prices. I don't really open boxes so I don't go often. PJ's sportscards is good but I haven't been there in over a year.

I like digging through bargain boxes, does all star cards have a lot of singles or is it majority wax?

they have a good amount of both, lots of stuff on consignment so you can spend a lot of time going through that.

All Star Cards is the place to go to in San Diego for a Hobby Shop, they have many items to choose from from wax, to single, to memorabilia etc. They also have a good size non sport section with Magic, Pokemon etc. Hope this helps.

All-Star Cards is great. Jerry the owner is down to earth and his daughter is very cool. He use to let me bring in my Boston Terrier all the time. Very friendly. If you go there ask him about the time we caught an old man stealing like dime cards...haha the old man called me a 'Gooku?' (later learned it's a derogatory term for Vietnamese people) at first I didn't know what the hell he was talking about since I am Italian/Japanese. We both confronted him but he was very hostile and tried to get in my face so I had to shove him away. Then he tried to say more racist things so I spit in his face and he left lol.

Clairmont didn't have a good reputation when I was there but I'd also hit up PJ's in Chula Vista I think it was if your in the area by the way All-Star Cards is in Santee right by La Mesa.
