Opinion question:

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to split my first case with my cousin and we are both leaning towards hockey (although basketball was my #1 choice)

We zeroed in on 11-12 contenders or rookie anthology. Has anyone broken these and has a favorite?

Would love to hear opinions on which has the best value and which has the best chances at higher valued cards?

Thanks in advance

If you have to pick one I'd go with Contenders all autos are on card. But if I were you guys I would wait a couple months and buy one of the new products coming out because there is a double rookie class.

Best of luck with whatever you decide :)
And if you pull any Lundqvist let me know.

PensFan29 06-27-2013 11:04 AM

If you're doing it immediately I say contenders all the way. If you're willing to wait, 2013-14 artifacts will be a great break.

If youre going 11-12 then contenders over anthology

coltssteve 06-27-2013 02:01 PM

I think both products can be purchased for very attractive prices. In other words, I think if one were to buy a case of 11-12 anthology, contenders or elite, you would likely pull more than $600 worth of cards. My vote would be for the case of Anthology, as I have busted about five boxes of Anthology and find that I get a lot of nice hits, but I like the contenders design better. For me, the bonus packs in Anthology put it over the top. Hope this helps.

I don't know about pulling $600 worth of cards but you are right with the Antholgy it does give you a nice variety of hits plus the bonus pack.

In terms of my pulling $600 estimate, I did a quick analysis based on what you will pull from the case with simple probabilities, and essentially a case of elite should yield more than $600 value based on Beckett prices (I know no one pays Beckett prices). I guess I should not speak so freely yet on Contenders or Anthology, but based on my box breaks I feel they are good product. Bottom line, my belief is that these three products are all priced at more than reasonable price points for those looking to break a case and possibly recoup some of the cost. I love busting product, but always gravitate toward product that at least delivers value close to what I paid. This is why I refuse to purchase Fleer Retro Hockey or Football, and why I hate Upper Deck football products.

What do you think offers the most potential just as far as the case hits go?

coltssteve 07-01-2013 11:52 AM

This will be a somewhat unscientific answer, but I use the prices of the key rookie autos to determine my rank order of the three products I mention above. So I would say likely Anthology, Contenders, then Elite.

A way to answer your question would be to look at which product gives you the most chances to pull a card worth more than $200? I think both Contenders and Anthology provide the best opportunity to do that.

Personally, I like Anthology because you won't be stuck with as many unmonetizable base cards. If design is important to you, then Contenders hands down wins. While Elite will deliver a lot of quality cards, you may have trouble recouping your money as it seems prices on ebay are not very strong for Elite.

I have considered busting a case of each, and would likely go Anthology first and Contenders second (just too many base cards that I have no space for and can't sell).
