Default Tavares v. Hedman

Interesting rumour and take on Tavares v. Hedman

Likely No. 1 draft pick will be... | Truth&Rumors | FanNation

IMO, if you need a defenseman more than a forward, you draft Hedman, if you need a scorer, draft Tavares.

I don't think an NHL team would be making a mistake drafting Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi or Braydon Schenn above Tavares. Tavares will be more of a playmaker, these two are goal scorers.

If I'm Florida and I get the #1 pick, I take Hedman because I have a ton of offensive talent coming together.

If I'm Dallas and I get the #1 pick I take Schenn because I have three playmakers at center and I can have Richards set up Schenn.

If I'm the Islanders and I need everything, I take Tavares because it will be years before I'm competitive and Tavares is the most complete forward out there.

Let's see how the rest of the regular NHL season pans out. I wouldn't be surprised for some teams to start really tanking it after the all star break to try to lock in the rights for Tavares. I agree that Tavares is a better playmaker than scorer and see him as a Forsberg type player without the grit. He should be a pretty safe pick provided the team that selects him develops him right.

KMD,

How dare you insult my lowly Islanders. They will make the playoffs...............in 2015. The islanders need to find a new goalie. Dipietro is not the answer. Luongo could have been the answer but Mike Dingleberry kept getting rid of all the young prospects.

The Isles don't give their #1's a chance to improve. Though Tavares would be a big improvement from whats going on on the Island now.

Is that when DiPietro's contract is up????

I know its really tough to find a really good defenseman in hockey, but I personally just think that you can't pass on a player like Tavares. I haven't seen the kid play, but when your were breaking OHL records held by Gretzky and Crosby, I just don't see passing on him. I think that KMD is right on one of them with Florida, with Horton and Booth coming into their own, a solid D-man might be the way to go to get that franchise turned around.

I have seen Tavares live and if you pass on him you are an idiot !! I don't care what your team needs,he has talent that you can't teach. He makes players on his team better. My only problem with him is HE should shoot more.

I've seen Hedman and Schenn live, and Hedman is going to be a special d-man. Schenn is going to be a hell of a finisher.

I think you draft for need if its close, which it is between Tavares and the rest of the crew, and if you need a goal scorer, Schenn is the way to go.

Hedman did not receive any honer at thw World JUnior Tourament which will most likely slide his stock to 2nd overall. However, John Tavares was Tournament MVP and won gold with Canada. The Swede team's coach was not impressed with Hedman and said he needed to play better. Otherwise, it is up to the team's need and who is most NHL ready.

Some players peak at 16 years old (I was one of them), and while its unfair to say that is the case with Hedman, it gives one pause when they are considering using the #1 overall pick on a player if it seems his development has stalled at age 16. More likely Hedman is having a rough year at the most inopportune time for him.

If I'm drafting for my Islanders (they won't much longer if they keep threatening to move to Kansas City) I think I would draft Braydon Schenn because he's the closest to AO out there this year.
