Im not the most avid hockey fan, but I always loved Peter Forsberg. Especially when he was on the flyers.
I remember him being absolutely amazing. Just wondering where the true hockey followers have him ranked all time. Doesn't have to be a numerical ranking. just trying to get a concept of how good he was. Elite? Great? Very Good? Any opinions are welcomed |

I'd go with elite for the most part.

When healthy, most certainly Elite. When hampered by injuries (which was sadly a lot), great.

Not top 20 for sure. I could easily think of 20 players I would put ahead of him.

The problem with Foresberg was he couldn't stay healthy for a full season. He was a better then a point per game player when healthy but he missed so much time in his career that his numbers aren't anywhere near where they could have been. Kind of ironic that he was traded for a guy who was also tremendous but not what he could have been due to injuries - Eric Lindros.
I hope he and Eric get into the HOF some day because they both were GREAT players when healthy. I'd have them both in my top 15 because they played enough seasons and I don't think it's fair to penalize a player because of injuries when they were able to dominate games when healthy.

I would consider Elite as one of the top 3 players in the league, at his time. I definitely think he fit that mold (when he was healthy).

Gretzky, Lemieux and them are legends. Foppa is definitely elite! Just don't think about his NHL days, but his international career as well. He scored one of the biggest international goals for his country in the '94 olympics.
But I will forever remember him for this game: The Greatest Comeback in Avalanche History - YouTube |

Honestly, I couldnt call him elite, I would list Sakic ahead of him, more complete player.

Oh I agree with one of the best combos, I just think Forsberg didnt do it long enough to be elite, JMO

I have met Forsberg a few times when I was like 16-17 years old and the Avalanche did their preseason stuff down here in Colorado Springs. I knew what hotel they stayed at so would go there and talk to them after practices and before they went to the Broadmoor to golf. He was always really laid back and chill. I loved watching him play, he had so much power and stickhandling skills. I have pictures of me with a lot of the Avs players from back then. Watching Peter Forsberg when the Avs were winning cups was something to see. Hes the reason i got into hockey. I will have a biased opinion but I would say the higher end of great. I think Gabriel Landeskog can be a lot like Peter Forsberg but its way to early to tell right now. Peter should be in the HOF though, dude was a beast and a great talent.

Cant be a complete player if you cant stay on the ice, I know it is not completely his fault, his playing style was not sustainable though, . but it factors into someones legacy, to me and alot of people

Forsberg was a superb talent who made other players around him better. He also was not entirely one dimensional in that he had a good +/- and chipped in with PIMs too.
In terms of forwards who entered the NHL in the last 20 years, he's certainly in the top 10, perhaps top 5. If you're looking for a current comparison, think of the creativity of Giroux mixed with the hockey sense and ice vision of Henrik Sedin, except even better. |
