Default Griswold Rinkwraith entry contest #1

Let's begin shall we.......

Let's start with some knowledge from little Ruby Sue;

Ruby Sue is here to remind us that sometimes you can be good in life, yet life sometimes still gives you the shaft.

My conversation with her made me think of the boards here and how halfway through the summer, I wasn't too impressed with what I was reading, then there was that whole report everyone for everything period of time and well...it was ugly.

Just recently though I hit two articles that really hit home and the authors of those two threads will be our first winners in this year's pool. Congrats to TheHeel and 37Jetson'

The day has come - My Daughter's Heart Surgery is Tomorrow
Hurricane Sandy destroyed my buddy's property and home

Heel gets in for stepping up when life gave his buddy the shaft and Jetson gets in for his daughter's courage which hit all too close to home for me when I had my chest surgery at age 12. Sometimes others are the ones we need to be strong for when life gives them the shaft and these two great members of our community did just that.

Anyway, your turn;

1) What happened this year when you tried to be good, but life still gave you the shaft??

All valid entries will be randomed at the end of the contest and the winner will be put into the poll of winners for the end of the contest.

Oh yeah, you need some motivation? This year we are going IN THE GRISWOLD...prizes will include a box of ITG Enshrined !

This contest will run until 11/22 at 5est. Good luck!!

Awesome choice for the first 2 winners. I can't think of anyone more deserving.

CONGRATS to Heel and Jetson!! WELL DESERVED and two excellent members of this great community!!!

Here is my story:

My neighbor's parents passed away over the summer. I offered to look after their house for as long as they needed to be out of state. We have always been friendly and on good terms over the years.

A week and a half went by and my neighbors returned. The next day I get a phone call and the husband neighbor is on the other end and is irate with me that his vintage muscle car would not start...for the life of me I could not understand how this was my fault.

Apparently the car needed to be started every day or something of that nature. HE NEVER TOLD ME THIS yet he insists he did. I know for a fact he did not. We have not really spoken since this happened and it really bums me out. I'm going to make an effort over the holidays to iron this out because it is such a trivial thing to be upset over. Hopefully it goes well because I am sick of walking on egg shells whenever we see each other...

Very nice choices so far. Wish that I could think of a story that fit the guidelines for this particular contest.

Oh wow...thank you! I truly appreciate it, however, I will be giving my spot to Corbin (mmbtvs). He stepped up and without even knowing my buddy, he sent three VERY generous gifts to him and his family. I never met Corbin and may never meet him but he is a true friend to me.

I agree, the 2 winners are certainly deserving!

I play semi-pro football. While we have intense practices, it's an unwritten rule that once a play is "almost" over, I.E. ball carrier wrapped up by 2 guys, we take it easy. I play Offensive Line, and one of our Running Back's had the ball and was wrapped up. The dudes tackling him laid off a bit, so I didn't really finish my block, since the play was pretty much over. Being a complete iditot, one of our linebackers comes flying in out of nowhere, and since I was near the ball carrier and tacklers, he absolutely blasts from the side, even though the play had essentially stopped, due to mutual respect between teammates. His hit caused me to fall into the pile and my left knee rolled up underneath me. This caused a badly sprained MCL and damage to connective tissue around the Medial Meniscus. Thank God nothing was torn. This happened during pre-season, so I didn't miss any games, but it was stil a very unfortunate experience. I was in considerable pain for over a week, missed nearly a week of work, was hit w/ a few hundred dollars in medical bills, and couldn't do any type of running/lower body training for 2 weeks. All in all, I missed over 3 weeks of practice, and lost a good amount of leg strength and cardio "wind". It took me unil about week 4 of the regular season to be back to 100%. Injuries are a part of sports, I comletely understand that. What gave me the shaft here is I was hit from the side after the play had ended, and I was really no longer involved in the play even if it was.

Great stuff Rink!

I should share this one from last year.....

I took my first trip to the US since being a kid (if Hawaii counts ). Was in Denver for business. Well, loved the city, and was enjoying myself a ton, my last night there and I had a late flight the following day, so I figured I'd head down a couple of blocks from the hotel and check out the rugby world cup at a pub. Had fun, met some folks bought some rounds (couldn't believe how cheap), and decided to head back. A guy approached a few of us standing outside and asked if we could spare a couple of bucks....I was in a generous mood, and gave him my last 10 bucks (early Christmas cheer probably helped lol). On my way back to the hotel, I thought ah crap I should get some cash for the airport and buy my son a teddy bear which I try to do at every city I go to. I walked through a drive through ATM and took out 40 bucks.....that's the last thing I remember. Next thing I know I'm stumbling around, no clue what city I'm in, or what happened. My face hurts like crazy, and it's about 530 AM. I stumbled into a bagel shop (pretty sure I came in through the kitchen somehow and scared the heck out of the girls working). All I could manage to ask was how to get to the hotel, and held up my hotel key. It was right across the street, so I managed to get to my room ( not sure how, as I don't remember getting there - the whole thing was like a dream). I guess I called home and talked to my wife, which I don't remember, and she called back at around 10.... Again don't remember. Long story "short". It was the longest day of my life trying to get home, capped off by a complete search by customs back in Edmonton....guess I look suspicious with half of my face swelled up, black eye swollen shut, and crooked nose.

Spent a week in bed with a vicious concussion, and the next couple of months healing.

Hopefully a lesson learned, to be a bit more aware, but giving to others will always be a part of what I try to be about, and I will always encourage that!

These are the threads that make this a great forum.

Here's my long and extremely painful story:

A couple of months back I took a day off work and was in a very generous mood, so I decided to take my wife's parents out for lunch. We go to Red Lobster, have a very nice lunch, I drop them off and go home.

I come home and have a message from my brother-in-law on the answering machine telling me to call him back. So I call him back and all he does is start shouting obscenities at me. Why? Because apparently it was his day to take them out, something I was completely unaware of.

We patched it up later, but for about a week he was shunning my wife and I. My father-in-law even tried to explain what had happened and he wouldn't listen.

Wasn't a fun week to say the least .

Hmmmm....so you were in Denver when all that went down? I think I found the culprit would screwed you up. He's known for his sneak attacks and spent some time working in Colorado.

Does he look familiar to you?

Ha, he's got my $40! I think I may have called him Mario and he went off..... The injury felt more Gary Suter vs Paul Kariya though....

First off, Congrats to the first winners!! Very well deserved and hats off to you Clark!!

I hope mine qualifies I think its a shaft..but I ran a contest this year where I gave some stuff away. come on..its free and its for fun. But this one person took it to heart when they came out as a loser because I figured out they were cheating..its really deep to explain the contest I held but going to just give the brief story version. So not only did this person email me with complaints..but the complaints kept coming for awhile afterwards. They have finally stopped. I do contests and giveaways sometimes for the fun of it. I enjoy helping others in the hobby and do it in fun ways. But when an sour apple like that shows up..it makes you second think about it. But I am still planning on another in the future.

Thanks for the contest Clark. Was fun last year and felt nice to get my rant off somewhere as well.

In September a coworker of mine asked if I could come down and help him cut up some trees that fell during a recent storm. So one Saturday I headed down to his house to help him out. Little did I know what was about to happen. While we were clearing the trees, something pierced my shoe and into my foot. I had a nice cut but didn’t think much of it. Well 2 days later my foot starts to swell up. I go to the doctor and they told me if it gets worse to go to the emergency room. Later on that day the swelling did get worse so I made my way to the hospital. They ran a bunch of test but had to wait for the results to come back. I was admitted on September 19 and spent 10 days in the hospital. Turned out I ended up getting streptococcus and staphylococcus (strep and staph infection). I saw numerous doctors and specialists during my stay. They said I would have been dead in 12-24 hours if I didn’t go to the hospital when I did. They were actually going to fly me to John Hopkins in Baltimore. I still need to see a doctor every 2 weeks and still cannot wear a shoe (going to stink when I visit the family in Pittsburgh when it gets cold and snowy). My buddy got all his firewood cut up and I got a nasty infection which almost took my life.

I learned a lot over this time. Having a daughter (20 months old) it makes you appreciate life and family a lot more. Good luck to everyone in this contest. Thank you for doing something cool like this.

Just go the shaft this morning. Been trying to play catch up with all my daughter's medical bills over the past couple years (don't want to discuss openly here, but things have been rough). I've been pushing off getting 2 new tires on my car - the front 2 are pretty much shot and I've been filling one up with air every other day for the past two weeks. This is our only vehicle. I finally had some extra $$ to get the 2 new tires and have that set up for today. I go out to my car this morning and one of the back (good) tires has a screw in it and is flat as a pancake. So I pop on the donut, get to the shop and the screw is in a spot in the tread where it can't be repaired. So now I need to shell out for another new tire.

Thanks life!!

I always try and be nice to others. Bring cookies and other snacks to co-workers etc. I have not been shafted nearly as badly as some of the others on here to qualify in my opinion. I've had my share of unexpected bills for mechanical failures or other things. Not nearly what some have had however.

I think Oilers and I have had similar issues in Denver where I gave some money to somebody and things just went back from there...however

I donate blood every 8 weeks with my grandmother. I drive 2 hours back to the Lehigh Valley and spend the day with her and my mom. Back in July they had to stick both arms and weren't able to draw out any blood. Veins rolled, didn't have enough water, whatever it was, was painful and I left with wraps on both arms...

Good choice for the first 2 winners OP.

I tried writing this yesterday, but then the site crashed when I went to go post it.

My wife and I just started doing Foster Care. We just had a 6yr old boy with us for 3 months. I get to spend the next week or so, filling in holes and reattaching hardware to cabinet doors, not really that big of a deal. Of course the kid does not appreciate anything we did for him the entire time he was here, complained when things went his, complained when things didn't go his way. The part where I get the shaft is from my employer. Tried to get FMLA, they rejected it, even though they offer it for Foster Care. When we first got the kid it took 3 days to get him enrolled in school, I had to miss 2 days of work for this. My employer gives us 10 sick days a year, but if you use them you get points, enough points gets you fired, so now I am close to being on thin ice for having to use sick days to get him enrolled in school. The lose of money for taking off isn't even that big of a deal, it is dealing with work where I get shafted. Just hope that what my wife and I are doing is helping.

Thanks for the contest Rink

This year I worked my behind off to get a promotion at work. Right when I thought I was going to get it, my boss, got transferred to a new district. I worked extremely hard to take my store from an underperforming one to one of the better performing ones in the region. I did that but when my boss got moved, the guy who replaced him brought in his guys from another region. I took a beating at work for three months. I was humiliated numerous times and could tell that the "new" guy was trying to get me to quit. I refused to let that happen but sometimes enough is enough. The breaking point was when he canceled my vacation a day before my mother was coming out to visit. I typed up my resignation letter and picked my mother up at the airport. I didn't plan on telling her. I had the letter in the glove box. She found it. She ended up talking me out of it and told me I worked to hard to let a man waste five years of hard work. I went back to work the next day with a chip on my shoulder. Eventually, a month later, a store opened in my old manager's district. He kept his word and promoted me lead this store. In the end, I guess this made me a stronger person but for six months I honestly wanted to give up. Moral of the story, never give up no matter how hard life gets. There's always someone who has it worse.

Because this was my winning entry, I thought you would all like an update

We had this kid for 3 1/2 months, he started spending time at a cousins house, usually 1 night over the weekend. About a week before Thanksgiving, the judge working his case decides to speed things up. So we were preparing him for a 2 night stay when we get a call that he is now going to move in permanently that day. We get as much stuff together and drive him over. When we get out of the car my wife asks if she can have a hug, he didn't even hesitate and said "No." I guess he felt we didn't do enough for him Every weekend we went to either the zoo, a museum, or the park, did at least one fun thing every weekend, played games with him and read stories to him every night before bed... but I guess it wasn't enough for him. We must have failed him

On the bright side my wife and I will not be missing the tantrums... and I can happily say that the holes in the wall have all been filled, just have to finish reattaching some cabinet hardware

Next up, we will be doing Respite care for a fellow Foster parent so they can spend 2 weeks in France, this time its a 6 year old girl, this will be the first girl that we will host, wish me luck
