Default Upper Deck cancels three 2012-13 hockey products

Upper Deck cancels three 2012-13 hockey products
Jan 24th 2013, 22:48

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor
Upper Deck canceled three of its 2012-13 hockey products in the wake of the NHL Players Association’s decision to restrict Rookie Cards this season, the company announced today.
UD has taken SPx, Upper Deck Series 2 and Ultimate Collection off the schedule.
However, collectors will still be able to get cards from these products in upcoming releases. Upper Deck hockey officials had already been working on upcoming products and don’t want the cards to go to waste.
Some cards that would have appeared in SPx and Series 2 will now be in 2012-13 SP Authentic, scheduled to be released in June.
There is still no word on what Upper Deck plans to do with redemptions from Series 1 and Artifacts.
“We will be sharing details on what collectors can expect for those cards and when we will be able to deliver them to the market soon. We appreciate collector’s patience while we work to acquire approvals for the company’s plans on those programs with league partners,” UD wrote on its blog.

You can fault Upper Deck for a lot of things but not for this. What else were they supposed to do? Put out junk products with no rookies and force dealers to buy them? I give them credit for making this call.

Anyone think the Retro Patch autos, Sign of the Times, and Marks of Distinction subset autos might be the best ever do to this, or is that wishful thinking?

I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of hockey collectors such as myself who couldn't give a damn about rookies, so I think assuming that a product woudn't sell if it doesn't have rookies is a very erroneous assumption.

Lots of hockey collectors prefer HOFers and other veterans, which is why cards of the all-time greats such as Orr, Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Yzerman, Bourque, Roy, etc. remain quite popular.

Personally, I'd prefer Topps buy them so that they can start producing Topps Heritage hockey again.

But now that Richard McWilliams has passed away, I think it is highly unlikely that UD will be able to make it as a stand-alone company, especially if they decide not to release any products in the one sport is which they actually have a license. There's only so much demand for NCAA-focused products, and UD has already saturated that market pretty well over the last few years.

UD owns too much good intellectual property (Parkhurst, Goudey, Philadelphia, Fleer) that it can't make proper use of since it doesn't have MLB/NFL/NBA licenses. They need to be bought out, plain and simple.

Don't blame UD for this. This is a sport-wide call, because Gary Bettman and a handful of owners are spiteful incompetents who canceled a half-season for zero gain.
