Anyone else see this? The stars on the Penguins better watch their knees, this is the third (at least by my count) mega-dirty hit by this jerk Ruutu and I would not be shocked to see someone try to take out Sid or Malkin because of it.
There is only so much nonsense certain teams will put up with, and I'm fairly sure that something really nasty is going to happen... not that I'm rooting for it, but Pittsburgh is the dirtiest team in the league (maybe the Flyers are worse) and there is going to be penance.

YouTube - Kovalchuk Injured by Ruutu
There it is. Ruutu is a pretty dirty player and that was a no doubt dirty hit knee-to-knee. I'm not surprised though, that's the player Ruutu is. |

I don't think there is any way you can say Ruutu was going after Kovie knees after watching that. He was taking a run at him but thats not a deliberate knee on knee hit. Kovie side stepping the charge is what caused that. Granted Ruutu is a scumbag and I think the ref did the right thing in giving him a game because the Thrashers would have spent the whole game chasing him around every time he touched the ice. Somebody needs to take care of a pest like him ala Dave Brown on Thomas Sandstrom back in the mid 80s.

KMD,
I'm an islanders fan here so I don't really care. The play wasn't whistled down till after the fact. Just because there was supposed to be an offside whistle because of a delayed offside that doesn't mean the play is going to stop until the whistle.

Huh ? Who defended him ? I can't stand the guy but I'll call it right. Don't let your obvious dislike of the Pens cloud the facts. The right call is a charge or even a rough, the knee contact wasn't intentional and the play isn't even being discussed had Kovie not sustained an injury.

As a certified USA hockey referee I would not have called a penalty on that play. He was going for the check and there was nothing dirty about that. If it was a Center Ice open ice check this thread would have never popped up. Kovulchuk made it worse for himself by trying to side step the check and there was an inadvertant knee to knee.

Yeah it is but that ok. What I find interesting and what only supports my post about the league cracking down on the pests is who Simon went after on his two major suspensions. Correct me if I'm wrong but one is Ruutu and the other I believe was Avery. Avery is nothing but a big mouth punk who was even hated by his own team mates in LA. Maybe Colin needs to open up his friggin eyes and see why people are snapping against idiots like those two. Like Ron Hextall once said, " this is a very emotional game with guys carrying sticks...."
