Lose next year's first rd pick because of the contract, which will now be a lottery pick more than likely.

If he retires is he allowed to come back as a free agent and sign anywhere or do Devils still have his rights?

I am no longer buying Devils player jerseys, Parise leaves, Kovi retires, couple hundred down the drain.

Lamoriello should have fought that imbecilic punishment the moment Buttman meted it out.

I agree. Luongo, Hossa, etc, no problems. All of a sudden Kovi and its circumventing. They said because of the years, but he was also younger when he signed his. From a non-partial view it was bs. Being a Devils fan it was outrageous.

It has to be tough to step away from 77 Mil.!! That's a lot of cash to give up because your 'homesick', I have to believe this is more Kovy not seeing a bright future for the Devils and knowing he will still get decent money playing in Russia and being with his family.

His walking away from the organization only open's up 6 Mil in cap space, but still lose a 1st and 3rd rd. pick. I think the Devils got the short end of the stick in this situation.

He really screwed the devils..if he retired at the start of Free agency they could have signed some pieces, or if he retired last yeart they could have made a really good offer to parise

I see them picking up Bruner and Grabo to one or two year deals, that wouldn't be bad at all.

Still not sure why Lou didn't forfeit the pick when it was 28th since that's about as low as he could have expected to pick...

Obviously it looks even worse now after this but it was ridiculously stupid to begin with.

Wasn't most of his contract front loaded with the $$$$$. So he pretty much took the big money and left. My guess is if this is true then the rest of his contract was probably for bear min when it comes to $$$$$ each year.

Deep down, I don't think he ever really wanted it to begin with.

He had $55 million coming over the next five years. I don't think you can say he took the money and left.

We have no idea what is going on in his life. They mentioned his daughter's education as being important. Is she a special needs child? Do we really know anything?

It sounds like he is putting family first and going home to Russia, good for him. I hope things go well for him.

So is he a Hall of Famer? I say yes.

Family in Russia...make $11 million in the US or $15 million in Russia. Pretty easy choice I would think.

Guess I was more asking if that was the case rather than stating that was actually what he was doing... I just know a lot of contracts these days are heavy on the front end with money..
